Biography
Adam Ackerman, MD, FACP, serves as Medical Director for Patient Safety, Accreditation, and Regulatory Affairs at Yale New Haven Health. In this role, he leads system-wide strategies to advance patient safety, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain readiness for accreditation surveys. His work focuses on closing the loop on safety events, integrating data-driven corrective actions, and fostering a culture of transparency and continuous improvement across the health system.
Dr. Ackerman's contributions to opioid stewardship and safe prescribing practices have been nationally recognized. He spearheaded the development of a new inpatient opioid prescribing standard emphasizing oral and subcutaneous administration whenever possible—an approach that has become a model for reducing risk and improving patient outcomes.
A former active-duty physician in the United States Air Force, Dr. Ackerman earned his MD from Tufts University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and completed his internal medicine residency at the Air Force’s Keesler Medical Center. He joined Yale New Haven Hospital in 2015 and previously served as Associate Director of Hospital Medicine, where he led successful initiatives to improve patients' length of stay, optimize the quality of documentation, and remove barriers to clinician efficiency.
Dr. Ackerman remains active in clinical teaching as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and continues to advance quality improvement and regulatory strategy at the intersection of clinical care and health system leadership.
