The RULER Training Institute is the first step for schools (that serve students in grades preK to 12) looking to implement RULER, the evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. The institute focuses on building a growth mindset and common language around emotions, skill development in emotional intelligence, and the building and sustaining of positive social and emotional climates where all stakeholders in a school feel empowered to learn, work, and achieve.
In 2019, the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence (YCEI) launched an online version of the in-person RULER Institute with the goal of making training accessible to more school teams. The two-day, in-person institute was typically held on campus at Yale University several times a year. An online offering provided an option to school teams unable to travel to New Haven and/or seeking a more flexible training schedule. Little did the team at the YCEI know that COVID-19 would shut down in-person training opportunities, and online training would become the only option for schools looking to adopt RULER. Now, as the health of the nation strengthens, the YCEI is bringing back in-person training options at Yale alongside its virtual offerings.
On November 13 and 14, the YCEI will welcome a limited number of pre-K to 12 school teams to campus for the first in-person RULER Institute in three years. Having offered in-person training for over 15 years and online training for 3 years, the YCEI staff are eager to welcome educators back to campus for the event. Due to continued demand and high ratings, YCEI will continue to offer the six-week, online training option alongside the in-person training. By offering both training modalities, YCEI aims to provide school teams with options that fit their needs and help them succeed. With over 4,000 schools trained, the Center hopes to continue helping schools to create emotionally intelligent communities where educators and students thrive.
