Fellow Focus in Four: Amy Labar, MD
Why did you choose medicine?
During my childhood, science, especially biology, was always my favorite subject. I initially incorporated this into a career in public health. However, with time, I realized that I wanted to add the individual perspective of medicine to the population perspective of public health that I had been using.
Why did you choose Yale Internal Medicine for your fellowship?
When I was applying for fellowship, I was interested in a program that offered rigorous clinical training and a supportive research environment while based at a university with strong global health programming. As a born and raised New Yorker, I also wanted to be based on the East Coast between Washington, D.C. and Boston. Yale Department of Internal Medicine checked all of the boxes!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10?
My overall goal is to pursue an academic research career focused on critical care medicine in a global context while practicing clinically in the Medical Intensive Care Unit. I will be pursuing research in post-tuberculosis lung disease in Uganda.
What is a fun fact about you?
The summer after college graduation, I biked across the US from Providence, RI, to Seattle, WA as part of Bike & Build to support affordable housing. Also, I did not learn to drive until after matching for residency in Pittsburgh.
