Biography

Dr. Nelson Ugwu is a dermatologic surgeon specializing in treating skin cancers using Mohs micrographic surgery, a precise technique used to remove skin cancer completely while preserving as much healthy skin as possible. His expertise also includes reconstructive surgery and the monitoring, prevention, and advanced management of patients at high risk for aggressive or multiple skin cancers, including those with predisposing genetic syndromes.

He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications covering the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of skin cancers, novel dermatologic therapeutics, and innovative approaches in cosmetic dermatology. Dr. Ugwu has also been involved in identifying the genetic causes of several pediatric and adult skin conditions, including vascular tumors, basaloid follicular hamartomas, congenital smooth muscle hamartomas, generalized acanthosis nigricans, and inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevi. He has presented his work at the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the American College of Mohs Surgery, the Society for Investigative Dermatology, and the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting, where he received the Everett C. Fox Memorial Award.

Dr. Ugwu completed his undergraduate studies at Truman State University with Departmental Honors in Biology before earning his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine, where he was awarded the Harold H. Lamport Thesis Prize and the Parker Prize. He completed his dermatology residency at the Harvard Combined Dermatology Residency Training Program, where he served as Chief Resident, followed by a subspecialty fellowship in Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology at Yale.
