  • 00:20to face in Harkness Hall,
  • 00:21I will do my very best during the
  • 00:24following virtual presentation to
  • 00:25provide you with useful information
  • 00:27about Yale School of Medicine,
  • 00:29which since its founding in 1810,
  • 00:32has played a significant role in
  • 00:34directing the field of medicine.
  • 00:37But before I begin,
  • 00:38I would like to request that you
  • 00:40please do not share the contents
  • 00:43of the PowerPoint slides.
  • 00:44This presentation is intended
  • 00:46solely for the purpose of helping
  • 00:49interviewees learn more about ysm.
  • 00:52Therefore, we kindly ask that
  • 00:54you do not attempt to record,
  • 00:56reproduce or disseminate any
  • 00:58part of this presentation.
  • 01:00Thank you in advance.
  • 01:01Now let's get started.
  • 01:05During the course of this
  • 01:06PowerPoint presentation,
  • 01:07I plan to introduce Ysm's guiding
  • 01:10principles and discuss academics,
  • 01:12research, clinical training,
  • 01:14the New Haven community,
  • 01:16and offer a few words about admissions.
  • 01:21Before we jump into the details
  • 01:23about the ysm experience,
  • 01:25let's take a step back to
  • 01:27view the big picture at Yale.
  • 01:29What guides not only admissions,
  • 01:31but directs all departments
  • 01:33and activities at YSM.
  • 01:35It begins with the mission of
  • 01:37the Yale School of Medicine,
  • 01:39which was recently revised and rewritten
  • 01:42following 14 focus group meetings and
  • 01:45input from over 1500 faculty, staff,
  • 01:49students and New Haven community leaders.
  • 01:53As you can see,
  • 01:55the institutional mission statement
  • 01:57is Yale School of Medicine,
  • 01:59educates and nurtures creative
  • 02:00leaders in medicine and science,
  • 02:02promoting curiosity and
  • 02:04critical inquiry in an inclusive
  • 02:07environment enriched by diversity.
  • 02:10We advance discovery and innovation,
  • 02:12fostered by partnerships
  • 02:14across the university,
  • 02:15our local community,
  • 02:16and the world we care for.
  • 02:19Patients with compassion and commit
  • 02:21to improving the health of all people.
  • 02:24Please note in this mission statement
  • 02:27the emphasis on health equity and
  • 02:29the sincere desire to address
  • 02:32health disparities through research,
  • 02:34advocacy, and clinical care.
  • 02:38The school's mission statement,
  • 02:40in turn dictates the objectives, policies,
  • 02:42and initiatives of ysm admissions.
  • 02:46As you can see, our ysm admissions
  • 02:49objectives are to admit a diverse class
  • 02:51of outstanding students who show the
  • 02:54greatest promise for becoming creative
  • 02:57leaders in medicine and science with
  • 02:59their broad range of experiences,
  • 03:01backgrounds, knowledge, and humanity.
  • 03:04These students commit to improving the
  • 03:07health and well being of all people.
  • 03:10In a nutshell, we in admissions
  • 03:13are looking for individuals that
  • 03:15will thrive at Ysm and beyond.
  • 03:17This includes identifying those
  • 03:19applicants who are not only
  • 03:21the best fit for the L system,
  • 03:24but also those who embody the
  • 03:26characteristics considered to be not only
  • 03:29desirable but essential to becoming the
  • 03:32creative leaders in medicine and science.
  • 03:37So let's start by describing what exactly
  • 03:40is this Yale system of medical education
  • 03:43that has been part of Ysm since 1931.
  • 03:46It represents an educational
  • 03:49philosophy reflected in the structure,
  • 03:51curriculum, principles,
  • 03:53goals, and management of YSM.
  • 03:56It's also reflected in the four
  • 03:58top priorities of the Yale system.
  • 04:01The first is respect for student
  • 04:04initiative and maturity.
  • 04:05Yale Medical students are treated as adults.
  • 04:08The second is curricular flexibility.
  • 04:11This gives students control
  • 04:13over their own time management.
  • 04:15The third is close faculty mentoring,
  • 04:18and the 4th is a required thesis
  • 04:20which has been in place since 1839
  • 04:23to promote scientific inquiry.
  • 04:26Generally speaking,
  • 04:27students who thrived within the Yale
  • 04:30system recognized that the ultimate
  • 04:32goal of their ysm education is for
  • 04:35the benefit of their patients,
  • 04:37not just to obtain a test score,
  • 04:39grade, or rank.
  • 04:41The Yale system of Medical Education
  • 04:44teaches students how to think critically
  • 04:47and prepares them to be lifelong learners.
  • 04:50To that end,
  • 04:51why as some students hold themselves
  • 04:53and their peers accountable for
  • 04:55doing their very best to prepare for
  • 04:58a career as physician scientists?
  • 05:00And this includes developing the knowledge,
  • 05:02skills,
  • 05:03and perspective necessary to best
  • 05:05serve their patients.
  • 05:09This table defines what the Yale system is
  • 05:11on the left side and is not on the right.
  • 05:15It was developed to dispel
  • 05:17many of the misunderstandings,
  • 05:18such as the notion that the flexibility at
  • 05:21ysm means a free pass with no expectations
  • 05:24and nothing could be further from the truth.
  • 05:27To sum it up, the non traditional
  • 05:31non competitive grading system allows
  • 05:33ysm to maintain academic rigor and
  • 05:37accountability without a conventional GPA.
  • 05:40Or class rank.
  • 05:41Freed from the usual anxieties provoked
  • 05:44by frequent high stakes examinations,
  • 05:47ysm students tend to learn for their
  • 05:50future rather than just for tests.
  • 05:52Competition for grades is eliminated
  • 05:54and students are eager to help one
  • 05:57another class spirit is remarkably
  • 05:59high year after year at Ysm.
  • 06:03While grades are not given and
  • 06:04rank order is not established.
  • 06:07Evaluation of students is still
  • 06:09a critically important part of
  • 06:11the educational process at YSM.
  • 06:15This slide is a graphical representation
  • 06:19of the educational infrastructure at YSM.
  • 06:22Our revised curriculum, launched in 2015,
  • 06:25embraces the proud traditions of our
  • 06:28past while constantly being focused
  • 06:31on the present and on the future.
  • 06:33There are eight overarching goals and
  • 06:36five guiding principles which together
  • 06:39form the foundation of the curriculum.
  • 06:41So what does the ysm curriculum look
  • 06:44like since it was updated in 2015,
  • 06:47while it's best described in
  • 06:50three large chunks?
  • 06:52The first is the sequence of basic
  • 06:54science and pre clerkship courses which
  • 06:57filled the first three semesters.
  • 07:00The integrated,
  • 07:01basic and clinical science curriculum
  • 07:03includes eight master courses,
  • 07:05three longitudinal courses and
  • 07:07nine longitudinal threads spread
  • 07:09out over the 1st 18 months of
  • 07:12study for all medical students.
  • 07:14Those pursuing both an MD as
  • 07:17well as those pursuing an MD PhD.
  • 07:20Beginning in the year one medical
  • 07:22students are placed in what we
  • 07:24refer to as interprofessional
  • 07:26longitudinal clinical experiences.
  • 07:28Or I'll see,
  • 07:29and these are groups of
  • 07:30three to four nursing,
  • 07:32PA and medical students guided by
  • 07:34two clinician coaches and together
  • 07:37they learn and work as a team and
  • 07:39each week go into the hospital
  • 07:42and practice patient interaction.
  • 07:44They learn how to interview and
  • 07:46take detailed medical histories
  • 07:48in the fall and perform a physical
  • 07:50exam in the spring.
  • 07:51After the LCE,
  • 07:52Ysm students in groups of four,
  • 07:55guided by a physician coach,
  • 07:56participate in the medical coach
  • 07:59experience or MCE from April of
  • 08:03year one through December of Year 2.
  • 08:06The second large chunk of the
  • 08:08curriculum is the required clerkship
  • 08:11rotations which begin in the
  • 08:13second semester of year number 2.
  • 08:15These twelve week clinical rotations
  • 08:18occupied a full year 2 academic
  • 08:20semesters plus the summer in between.
  • 08:23The clinical clerkship blocks
  • 08:26cover four general themes.
  • 08:28The first is internal medicine and neurology.
  • 08:31The second is surgery and emergency medicine.
  • 08:33The third is gynecology and Pediatrics,
  • 08:36and the 4th is psychiatry.
  • 08:38The final 17 months at YSM can
  • 08:41be devoted to sub internships,
  • 08:43electives,
  • 08:44research and preparation for the USMLE
  • 08:47step exams to supplement the YSM curriculum,
  • 08:51the wires,
  • 08:52some Office of Global Health Education
  • 08:54provides students with additional
  • 08:56training opportunities in a variety
  • 08:59of resource challenged areas,
  • 09:01both domestic and abroad.
  • 09:04The Ysm Office of Medical Education
  • 09:06has established a new health
  • 09:08equity thread that will span all
  • 09:10four years of the curriculum.
  • 09:15As I mentioned, there are eight
  • 09:18overarching medical education goals.
  • 09:20The Ysm curriculum is designed to
  • 09:22eat to address each of these eight
  • 09:24topics as areas of mastery essential
  • 09:27for future leaders in medicine.
  • 09:29You will be very happy to hear
  • 09:31that distinguished Yale faculty,
  • 09:33not TAS or graduate students,
  • 09:35actually teach at ysm,
  • 09:37often in small seminar,
  • 09:40conference and tutorial settings.
  • 09:42Why are some classes feature
  • 09:44a balanced mix of lecture,
  • 09:47seminar and interactive group settings?
  • 09:50Why are some students consistently
  • 09:52report that access to faculty and
  • 09:55support services is excellent?
  • 09:59In addition to the overarching goals,
  • 10:01these are the five guiding
  • 10:03principles for the YSM curriculum.
  • 10:05It is important to highlight that throughout
  • 10:07the medical school experience at Byas M,
  • 10:10there are many opportunities for student
  • 10:12assessment, feedback and reflection,
  • 10:15and that's how we empower ysm students to
  • 10:19continuously learn and make improvements.
  • 10:22As a testament to yields dedication to
  • 10:25promoting excellence in medical education,
  • 10:27the teaching and Learning Center
  • 10:29was established in 2012 to promote
  • 10:32and support excellence in research,
  • 10:34scholarship, educator development,
  • 10:36assessment and learning technology.
  • 10:39Moreover, as a testament to
  • 10:42ysm's dedication to fostering
  • 10:44interactive and team based learning,
  • 10:46significant resources were invested
  • 10:48in newly renovated facilities
  • 10:51on the medical school campus.
  • 10:53For example,
  • 10:54the Cushing Whitney Medical
  • 10:56Libraries newly renovated spaces
  • 10:58were unveiled in the fall of 2019.
  • 11:01They include a series of technologically
  • 11:03advanced rooms and spaces meant to
  • 11:06foster learning and innovation,
  • 11:08including a 125 seat classroom,
  • 11:12816 seat classrooms,
  • 11:13four meeting rooms,
  • 11:1524 workstations and lounge seating.
  • 11:18Why is Sam also recently renovated?
  • 11:20The clinical skills practice spaces
  • 11:23in Edward Harkness Memorial Hall.
  • 11:25The new spaces allow for realistic
  • 11:27clinical practice settings and have
  • 11:30technology for improved instruction.
  • 11:34This slide depicts the pipeline of influences
  • 11:38output and global impact of YSM alumni.
  • 11:42It is the flexibility,
  • 11:44inspiration and support which
  • 11:46provides each and every ysm student
  • 11:49with the opportunity to work hard
  • 11:52to master the integrated material
  • 11:54in a very customized way.
  • 11:56Why some students received support and
  • 11:58guidance from their academic advisors,
  • 12:01chosen advisors Dean of Student
  • 12:03Affairs Research peas professors,
  • 12:05clerkship mentors and upper questions.
  • 12:09There are also numerous initiatives and
  • 12:11resources such as class bonding activities,
  • 12:14Wellness Committee, Big SIB,
  • 12:16Little SIB pairings,
  • 12:17peer advocates and mental
  • 12:19health resources designed to
  • 12:22ensure student Wellness at ysm.
  • 12:26The unique combination of holistic
  • 12:29admissions plus student efforts guided by
  • 12:32the Yale System curriculum and mentorship,
  • 12:35yield outstanding output
  • 12:36in the form of clinicians,
  • 12:38scholars and leaders with global impact.
  • 12:42In addition to faculty mentors and peers,
  • 12:44YSM leadership also directly
  • 12:47influenced student development as an
  • 12:50example of an outstanding role model.
  • 12:52Doctor Nancy J Brown,
  • 12:54a dedicated teacher,
  • 12:55an internationally renowned
  • 12:57investigator and clinician,
  • 12:58became the first female Dean of Yale
  • 13:02School of Medicine on February 1st of 2020.
  • 13:05She is the first woman to lead the
  • 13:08medical school in its 210 year history
  • 13:10and currently is the only female Dean
  • 13:13of any Ivy League medical school.
  • 13:16Moreover, the Office of Diversity,
  • 13:18Inclusion, Community engagement,
  • 13:20and equity,
  • 13:21or DICE for short at YSM is
  • 13:24another influential factor that
  • 13:26fosters an inclusive environment.
  • 13:29Community and equity.
  • 13:31Ultimately,
  • 13:31the school success is reflected
  • 13:34in the short term.
  • 13:36In high step scores and in
  • 13:38residency matching this year.
  • 13:40Every ysm student that wanted to be matched
  • 13:43was in fact matched in the long term.
  • 13:46Why some success is evident in the
  • 13:48very long list of achievements and
  • 13:51contributions of YSM alumni around the world.
  • 13:56To maintain ysm status
  • 13:58as a top medical school.
  • 14:01Ysm, Yale University and Yale.
  • 14:04New Haven Hospital continue to
  • 14:06invest in infrastructure that
  • 14:08facilitates research innovation
  • 14:10and translational medicine.
  • 14:12These five projects represent just
  • 14:14a few of the recent initiatives.
  • 14:19Turning from the Ysm curriculum
  • 14:21and the yield system to research,
  • 14:23which, by the way, is made possible
  • 14:25by the flexible yield system,
  • 14:27I'd like to underscore that research
  • 14:29is woven into the very fabric and
  • 14:31culture of the Yale School of Medicine.
  • 14:34Research is important to the
  • 14:36future of medicine and therefore
  • 14:38it is important to Yale.
  • 14:39As a testament to its commitment to research,
  • 14:42Yale constructed the Amlin Center
  • 14:44for Medical Research and Education.
  • 14:47It is a 457 thousand square foot complex,
  • 14:51which combines facilities for research,
  • 14:54education, magnetic resonance
  • 14:56imaging and animal research.
  • 14:59The $176 million structure is home
  • 15:02to over 700 investigators and fosters
  • 15:06interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • 15:08Yeles core research facilities provide
  • 15:10access to state of the art scientific
  • 15:14instrumentation on three separate campuses.
  • 15:17The Yale School of Medicine,
  • 15:18Campus Central campus,
  • 15:20and West campus.
  • 15:24It is not an overstatement to say that
  • 15:27Ysm is a beacon of scientific discovery.
  • 15:30In 2022, more ysm faculty were elected
  • 15:34to the National Academy of Medicine,
  • 15:37bringing the total to 54 from Yale.
  • 15:40Also, two more ysm faculty were inducted
  • 15:43to the National Academy of Sciences and
  • 15:45five ysm faculty were elected to the
  • 15:48American Academy of Arts and Sciences,
  • 15:50including our own Dean Nancy Brown.
  • 15:53Each year since 2000, and.
  • 15:55One YSM has ranked in the top 10,
  • 15:58most recently number four of the
  • 16:01most funded U S medical schools.
  • 16:04In 2020, Ysm was awarded over $512
  • 16:08million in research grants from the NIH.
  • 16:12The Office of Student Research led by
  • 16:15two associate Deans guide Ysm students
  • 16:17in selecting research mentors and topics
  • 16:19for the medical thesis projects and
  • 16:22in presenting at Student Research Day,
  • 16:24they oversee substantial funding for
  • 16:27student research for thesis research,
  • 16:305th year research projects, summer research.
  • 16:32After the first year named Fellowships,
  • 16:35International opportunities,
  • 16:37and much, much more.
  • 16:40Yale offers a very unique,
  • 16:42tuition free 50 year.
  • 16:44During which Ysm does not charge any tuition.
  • 16:49Students can pursue research or clinical
  • 16:52interests at Yale or at another
  • 16:55university or at an institute abroad.
  • 16:58There are also opportunities
  • 17:00to pursue dual degrees,
  • 17:02the tuition free Master of Health
  • 17:04Science is a popular fifth year option.
  • 17:07Other joint degree options to pair
  • 17:09with the MD include public health,
  • 17:12global affairs, law management,
  • 17:14divinity and the Graduate School.
  • 17:16Tuition for the secondary will be charged
  • 17:19by Yale graduate or professional schools.
  • 17:22The general rule is that joint degree
  • 17:25programs shave approximately one year
  • 17:26off of the total time of the two.
  • 17:28Programs, if they were pursued sequentially.
  • 17:32So,
  • 17:32for example an MD JD would take six
  • 17:34years rather than seven and an end.
  • 17:36The NBA would take five years instead of 6.
  • 17:40It's also worth highlighting that
  • 17:43the very well established Ysm MD
  • 17:46PhD program will celebrate its 50th
  • 17:49anniversary in October of this year.
  • 17:54Since I'm addressing the topic of research,
  • 17:57I'd like to circle back to the
  • 18:00medical thesis because all students
  • 18:02at YSM must engage in original
  • 18:05research during medical school.
  • 18:07The MD thesis, a ysm graduation requirement,
  • 18:11is an essential part of the curriculum
  • 18:13designed to develop critical judgment
  • 18:16habits of self education and application
  • 18:18of the scientific method to medicine.
  • 18:21Yale supports students research interests
  • 18:24in a very wide range of fields and
  • 18:27topics and offers numerous opportunities
  • 18:29to conduct research across what
  • 18:32President Solovei refers to as one Yale.
  • 18:35These two sample thesis titles shown
  • 18:37on the screen reflect reflect the
  • 18:40spectrum of student research interests.
  • 18:43I need to emphasize that a close
  • 18:46working relationship between the
  • 18:48student and faculty research mentor is
  • 18:51an essential component of the medical
  • 18:53thesis experience in particular,
  • 18:55but also a common feature of all
  • 18:59ysm student LED research.
  • 19:01The Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine
  • 19:03was founded in 1928 as a dedicated
  • 19:06place for Yale Medical students to
  • 19:08publish their original research.
  • 19:11It has an impact factor of 3.5.
  • 19:1449 which is very unique for a
  • 19:16journal that is student,
  • 19:17run and edited.
  • 19:21Each year, several ysm students jump
  • 19:23into research even before classes begin.
  • 19:25Start at, Yale represents a fantastic
  • 19:28opportunity to do exactly this.
  • 19:30It is an 8 week funded summer program
  • 19:33appropriate for a full range of
  • 19:36biomedical research experience,
  • 19:37from very little to extensive.
  • 19:40This program offers mentored
  • 19:43research experience and structured
  • 19:45educational activities during the
  • 19:47summer before matriculation at Ysm.
  • 19:50Start at Yale 2021 was held in person
  • 19:53while the 2020 summer program was held
  • 19:56virtually due to COVID restrictions.
  • 19:59The overarching goal of start at
  • 20:01Yale remains to encourage interest
  • 20:03in physician scientist careers
  • 20:05among entering medical students.
  • 20:07The exposure to the extraordinary range
  • 20:10of outstanding scientific exploration
  • 20:12at Yale influences ysm students,
  • 20:14choices of mentors and projects
  • 20:16for future research activities,
  • 20:18including the thesis work.
  • 20:20Participants routinely report that start
  • 20:23at Yale is a very rewarding experience.
  • 20:27And it may be hard to see in this picture,
  • 20:29but underneath those surgical masks,
  • 20:31those students in pictured
  • 20:33are actually smiling.
  • 20:36You may be wondering,
  • 20:38in addition to research training,
  • 20:40where do I assume students
  • 20:42engage in clinical training?
  • 20:43Well, we have an abundance
  • 20:46of rich opportunities.
  • 20:47Clinical clerkships,
  • 20:48those rotations that I mentioned
  • 20:50in years two and three expose ysm
  • 20:53students to a large and diverse
  • 20:55patient population at Yale.
  • 20:56New Haven Hospital,
  • 20:57located just across the street from the
  • 21:00medical school at Smilow Cancer Hospital,
  • 21:02located just around the corner at the
  • 21:05Veterans Administration Hospital.
  • 21:06Located in West Haven CT,
  • 21:08which is just a 10 minute drive away.
  • 21:10And it also happens to be the second
  • 21:12largest VA Medical Center in the
  • 21:14country and also opportunities at
  • 21:16ten other affiliated hospitals and
  • 21:19numerous community private practices.
  • 21:22To be clear,
  • 21:23Ysm students may in fact have
  • 21:24to travel that is either drive
  • 21:27or take public transportation
  • 21:28for their clinical rotations.
  • 21:30In addition,
  • 21:31the YSM students and faculty are
  • 21:34actively involved in efforts to
  • 21:36safely address the unmet healthcare
  • 21:38needs of the New Haven community.
  • 21:41There are opportunities to shadow
  • 21:43or volunteer in New Haven at the
  • 21:45Cornell Scott Hill Health Clinic,
  • 21:47which is a Medicaid internal medicine
  • 21:50primary care center as well as at
  • 21:53the Fairhaven Community Clinic,
  • 21:54which is a Medicaid pediatric
  • 21:57primary care center.
  • 21:58Why are some students also volunteer
  • 22:01to provide compassionate care to
  • 22:03underserved populations through healthcare?
  • 22:05Ask access points such as the
  • 22:08neighborhood Health Project,
  • 22:09Yale Refugee Clinic, Haven Free Clinic,
  • 22:12New Haven healthy start, soup kitchens,
  • 22:15Patient navigator program,
  • 22:17and translation services.
  • 22:20So this begs the question,
  • 22:21where does all of this medical learning
  • 22:24research and clinical training take place?
  • 22:27And the answer is New Haven, CT.
  • 22:29But community first begins at home,
  • 22:32within Ysm.
  • 22:34Which then extends out to the larger
  • 22:37city of the New Haven community.
  • 22:41For those who choose to matriculate to ysm,
  • 22:44I'd like to be very clear in making you feel.
  • 22:47Rest assured that there is a place for you,
  • 22:51and significant steps have been taken
  • 22:53to make everyone feel at home at YS M.
  • 22:57As I previously mentioned,
  • 22:58the DICE office shapes the Ysm culture
  • 23:01by fostering an inclusive climate,
  • 23:03community involvement, HealthEquity,
  • 23:05and social social justice.
  • 23:09YSM has a strategic plan in place.
  • 23:11For enhancing the recruitment,
  • 23:13retention and inclusion of women
  • 23:15and underrepresented minority
  • 23:17groups in medicine to our faculty,
  • 23:20staff, Medical fellows,
  • 23:23residents and students,
  • 23:25YSM offers seven student affinity
  • 23:29groups and Yale offers four cultural centers,
  • 23:33each with its own eldeen and open to
  • 23:36the entire Yale student community.
  • 23:41So now I'd like to describe the Elm City,
  • 23:44the home of Ysm for those who are unfamiliar.
  • 23:48New Haven is a small coastal
  • 23:51city in New England,
  • 23:52often referred to as a big deal,
  • 23:55with a small feel.
  • 23:56The City of New Haven is a beautiful,
  • 23:58complex and layered urban center bounded
  • 24:02by both developed suburban communities
  • 24:05and undeveloped natural preserves.
  • 24:08This photo is an aerial view of New Haven,
  • 24:11locally dubbed as the greatest small city
  • 24:13in America, and the acronym is GS CIA.
  • 24:17In the picture you can see New Haven
  • 24:20Harbor Long Island Sound Heels,
  • 24:22Harkness Tower,
  • 24:23the Knights of Columbus Building
  • 24:25and lots of natural greenery.
  • 24:29In the greater New Haven area there
  • 24:31is an abundance of arts and culture,
  • 24:34including world class museums,
  • 24:36Broadway worthy theaters, music concerts.
  • 24:39Gallery studios movies.
  • 24:42We also offer clubs, restaurants,
  • 24:44shopping, religious worship,
  • 24:46nearby outdoor activities such as farms,
  • 24:49hiking trails, parks and beaches.
  • 24:52Several institutions of higher education
  • 24:55and of course excellent health care.
  • 24:58For the trivia fans in the audience,
  • 25:00I'd like to point out that New Haven
  • 25:02is the birth place of the Upbeats
  • 25:05style of thin crust pizza at Pepe's,
  • 25:07and Sally's.
  • 25:08It's also the origin of the hamburger at
  • 25:12Louie's lunch and it is the origin of the
  • 25:15lollipop named after a racehorse in 1908.
  • 25:18The insanely diverse New Haven food
  • 25:20scene offers a wide variety and
  • 25:23large number of dining options.
  • 25:26In fact,
  • 25:26it has the greatest number of restaurants
  • 25:29per capita of any city in America.
  • 25:32New Haven has a very diverse
  • 25:35population of 130,000 residents,
  • 25:37but interestingly enough there
  • 25:40is no single ethnic majority.
  • 25:43In terms of its geographic location,
  • 25:45New Haven is optimally positioned between
  • 25:48two of the Northeast metropolitan hubs,
  • 25:50Boston and New York City nearby.
  • 25:53You will also find Providence,
  • 25:55RI and Hartford,
  • 25:56CT.
  • 25:57Amtrak trains and Metro North
  • 25:59Railroad provide easy transport
  • 26:02from New Haven's Union Station to
  • 26:05Philadelphia and Washington DC.
  • 26:07Yelitza, very walkable campus,
  • 26:09with pedestrian accessibility from
  • 26:12the medical school campus to Yale,
  • 26:15New Haven Hospital,
  • 26:16and Yale graduate and professional schools,
  • 26:18and this presents significant opportunities
  • 26:20for research and joint degrees.
  • 26:23In addition to Bradley International Airport,
  • 26:25New Haven has its own regional
  • 26:28airport called Tweed.
  • 26:29It also sponsors a bike share program
  • 26:32and offers a Connecticut Transit bus
  • 26:35line with over 24 different routes.
  • 26:38New Haven is perfect for commuters given
  • 26:41easy accessibility to Interstates 95 and 91,
  • 26:44which are north South highways
  • 26:47which span the entire East Coast.
  • 26:50So now that I've addressed the
  • 26:53Ysm educational philosophy,
  • 26:54curriculum, research opportunities,
  • 26:55clinical training and the
  • 26:57New Haven community,
  • 26:59I'd like to offer a brief concluding
  • 27:02word about the medical school
  • 27:04admissions process at Yale.
  • 27:06First,
  • 27:07I'd like to shed some light on her
  • 27:09philosophy and approach to admissions.
  • 27:12As you can see from this slide,
  • 27:14the ysm approach to admissions
  • 27:16is holistic and contextual,
  • 27:18which means we carefully consider each
  • 27:21and every part of the application,
  • 27:23and we do so within the context of each
  • 27:27individual applicant's background.
  • 27:30We try to examine the surround sound.
  • 27:32What you have achieved,
  • 27:34either in some cases because of
  • 27:36or in other cases in spite of
  • 27:38your background or circumstances.
  • 27:40At Ysm we have no formulas,
  • 27:43algorithms, rubrics or cut offs for
  • 27:46the quantitative application parts.
  • 27:48And why is that?
  • 27:49Well,
  • 27:49most often academic achievement
  • 27:51alone will not be a distinguishing
  • 27:54factor for admissions given the
  • 27:56quality of our applicant pool.
  • 27:59We need to evaluate candidates
  • 28:01in three dimensions.
  • 28:02This is why this is the reason that
  • 28:05the interviews plays such a critical
  • 28:07role in the overall application process.
  • 28:12So I'd like to summarize my presentation
  • 28:15with just a few concluding remarks.
  • 28:19The Yale system of Medical Education
  • 28:21teaches students how to think
  • 28:22critically and be accountable for
  • 28:24their approaches to learning,
  • 28:26clinical practice and research.
  • 28:28Yale University and healing
  • 28:30in Haven Health services.
  • 28:33Offer an abundance of opportunities
  • 28:35for joint degrees cross disciplinary
  • 28:38collaborative research and
  • 28:40cutting edge clinical training.
  • 28:43The diverse New Haven community
  • 28:45is culturally Rich,
  • 28:47offers a great quality of living.
  • 28:49And the layered complexity is
  • 28:52welcoming and provides many
  • 28:55opportunities for active engagement.
  • 28:57In closing, I wish you the very best of luck.
  • 29:01With your ysm interview day,
  • 29:03thank you very much.
