- 00:09Luminary Awards of excellence ceremony.
- 00:12For those who don't know me,
- 00:14I'm Kathleen Scott from radiation oncology
- 00:15and I'll be your moderator this evening.
- 00:18The Smiler Luminary Awards of Excellence
- 00:20honor people who consistently exceed
- 00:22performance expectations and deliver
- 00:24high quality care for our patients,
- 00:26their families,
- 00:27and the health system throughout the year.
- 00:30There are five categories of excellence.
- 00:33Community service Leadership.
- 00:35Optimization an innovative solutions
- 00:39patient experience and research.
- 00:42All nominees in all five categories
- 00:44must demonstrate the Yale New Haven
- 00:47Health System standards of professional
- 00:49behaviors in their professional practice.
- 00:51In these unprecedented times,
- 00:53the recognition of individuals and teams
- 00:56has become more important than ever before.
- 00:59Throughout our organization and
- 01:00in the face of extreme challenges,
- 01:02we have seen and continue to see a
- 01:04level of commitment to our patients
- 01:06and community that makes us all
- 01:08proud to work at Smilow and for
- 01:10the Yale New Haven health System.
- 01:12Tonight we are joined by some of our
- 01:15incredible leaders who joined us all in
- 01:17recognizing our extraordinary nominees.
- 01:20With their continued leadership,
- 01:21we have been able to manage and persevere
- 01:23through the past eight months and are
- 01:25well positioned to be able to manage
- 01:27and persevere through what lies ahead.
- 01:29I now have the honor of
- 01:32introducing Doctor Cheek.

- 01:56hope you can hear me now.
- 01:58I know Lorna was actually
- 02:00supposed to be with you tonight,
- 02:02but she couldn't make it.
- 02:03So I'm truly honored to actually
- 02:05be able to take her place.
- 02:07Let you all know how great it is to be
- 02:09truly part of this ceremony to honor
- 02:11our coworkers who have excelled in the
- 02:14areas which will be celebrated tonight.
- 02:16Thank you again for allowing me to be
- 02:18apart of this special presentation
- 02:19celebrating the recipients of the
- 02:21Smilow Luminary Awards for Excellence,
- 02:22which serves to recognize the great
- 02:25work performed by our staff and
- 02:27service to all of our patients
- 02:28who we have treated in the most
- 02:31in this most difficult year.
- 02:32In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic,
- 02:34in our second significant surge
- 02:36here in New Haven, across the state.
- 02:38Your work in concert with all of
- 02:40our staff allows us to take care of
- 02:42the most sick as the most complex
- 02:44patients with cancer.
- 02:45Who desperately need our care.
- 02:48Thank you for your hard work,
- 02:49your diligence and your sensitivity
- 02:51to the needs of all who of who
- 02:54you have had the honor to serve.
- 02:56Again, congratulations to all of you.
- 02:57I think next is a video that captures
- 03:00the spirit of the teamwork and
- 03:01capabilities of what we can accomplish.
- 03:03Here at Yale,
- 03:04New Haven in these difficult times.

- 07:40director of the Yale Cancer Center,
- 07:42an physician and chief of
- 07:44the Smilow Cancer Hospital,
- 07:45we will continue our welcome and
- 07:47lead us into our awards presentation.
- 07:49Doctor Fuchs. Kathleen,

- 07:54Yes we can. But that in 2020 the popular
- 07:59catch phrase would be you're on mute.
- 08:03But I'm I'm glad you can hear me and
- 08:06and welcome to all to the second annual
- 08:09small Illuminator Awards for excellence.
- 08:12We so appreciate Doctor Churchwell for
- 08:14joining us for this important event.
- 08:17Celebrating the great accomplishments
- 08:19of our colleagues across Milo
- 08:21and the Yale Cancer Center.
- 08:23You know that each day the people
- 08:26of Smilow and Cancer Center take on
- 08:29the responsibility of confronting
- 08:31one of the greatest challenges that
- 08:34face medicine and science today,
- 08:36namely cancer.
- 08:37Success in our battle against cancer
- 08:41requires individuals who span a range of
- 08:44talents and clinical care administration,
- 08:47research, education,
- 08:48and outreach all working together
- 08:51to fundamentally improve the
- 08:53lives of patients and families.
- 08:55Moreover,
- 08:55success in this battle requires perseverance.
- 08:59Dedication in a commitment, innovation,
- 09:01and defining new ways to deliver cancer care.
- 09:06An enable discovery in Cancer Research.
- 09:09At Smilow,
- 09:10our patients are so fortunate to receive
- 09:13care in state of the art facilities.
- 09:16But in the end, we recognize that
- 09:18it is not the bricks and mortar.
- 09:21But rather the people who work here
- 09:23that truly makes the difference.
- 09:25It is from that recognition
- 09:27that launched the Smile,
- 09:29a luminary awards in excellence.
- 09:32We sought to recognize individuals
- 09:34and teams who went the extra mile.
- 09:37Who define new levels of excellence
- 09:39and new advanced.
- 09:41The vital mission of our cancer enterprise.
- 09:44That deep commitment is made Smilow
- 09:47cancer hospital and Yale Cancer
- 09:49Center aworld leader in clinical care,
- 09:52innovation, research,
- 09:53Discovery education now reach.
- 09:56Today we provide expert,
- 09:58compassionate care to an ever expanding
- 10:00number of patients and families at
- 10:03centers across Connecticut and Rhode Island.
- 10:05Now seeing 48% of all newly diagnosed
- 10:08cancer patients in the state of Connecticut.
- 10:12Our research enterprise has
- 10:14led countless new discoveries,
- 10:16including clinical trials this year
- 10:18that led to the approvals of four new
- 10:22cancer treatments by the Food and
- 10:25Drug Administration and unprecedented
- 10:27accomplishment in any single year
- 10:30by any individual Cancer Center.
- 10:33Those great achievements aside.
- 10:35We all recognized as the video documents
- 10:39that 2020 has been no ordinary year.
- 10:42Faced with the greatest public
- 10:44health crisis and over a century,
- 10:46the people of Smilow and Yale Cancer
- 10:49Center met this great challenge.
- 10:51Head on.
- 10:52Redesigning clinical care and
- 10:54research protocols,
- 10:55moving clinical units and a dayan
- 10:58redeploying staff across the entire
- 11:01system and through it all remaining
- 11:04steadfast to ensuring that every
- 11:06patient's care needs were addressed
- 11:09seamlessly and that we maintain the
- 11:12absolute safety of our patients in our staff.
- 11:16In the Great legacy and rich
- 11:18history of this Cancer Center,
- 11:202020 will long be remembered
- 11:22as our finest hour.
- 11:24And all those who worked tirelessly
- 11:26to preserve the vital mission of our
- 11:29center will be forever recognized
- 11:30as our heroes.
- 11:32So before we start this ceremony,
- 11:34let me say to everyone and Smilow
- 11:37cancer hospital Ann Yale Cancer Center.
- 11:40Thank you for all that you have done.
- 11:43And all that you continue to do.
- 11:46This evening we celebrate more than
- 11:4855 individuals and teams who set new
- 11:51standards and community service leadership.
- 11:53Optimization, optimization
- 11:54and innovation solutions.
- 11:56Patient experience in research.
- 11:59Your work exemplifies the great aspects
- 12:02of our center and as our champions,
- 12:05we are also proud of you.
- 12:08I also want to thank our organizers,
- 12:10namely the committee that makes

- 13:00community in extraordinary ways.

- 13:05diversity and demonstrate community
- 13:07benefit by improving the health
- 13:09and well being of our cancer
- 13:12communities throughout healthcare,
- 13:13economic or social initiatives.

- 18:29in the ongoing processes of
- 18:31discovery and or interpretations of
- 18:33discoveries in cancer care research.
- 18:35This includes those who serve
- 18:38in supporting roles.
- 18:39This may also include basic research
- 18:42establishing the building blocks for
- 18:44future oncologic clinical outcomes,
- 18:46clinical research to improve patient care,
- 18:48population based research,
- 18:50exploring cancer causes and
- 18:51trends in specific populations.
- 18:53In translation of research,
- 18:55helping to move research findings
- 18:57into everyday cancer care,
- 18:58Deanna will now read the

- 19:51to provide us with some closing thoughts.

- 19:56Thank you very much Kathleen and Painless,
- 19:59and most of all I would like to extend
- 20:01my gratitude to the individuals
- 20:04and the teams who have made such an
- 20:07enormous difference for our patients
- 20:09in these past weeks in months.
- 20:12You know it. It's difficult to
- 20:15capture in an event like this.
- 20:17What impact all of you have on patients
- 20:21and families on a day to day basis?
- 20:25I know that I might as well as other
- 20:29leaders are inspired by the work you do,
- 20:32your dedication, your commitment,
- 20:34your persistence,
- 20:34and your compassion and your humanity.
- 20:38And it is the the.
- 20:41The best that you bring of
- 20:45yourselves everyday.
- 20:46That is, is so meaningful,
- 20:48and often I reflect on the
- 20:51fact that our teams.
- 20:53Make impact in small ways
- 20:56that often go unnoticed,
- 20:58but it is those small extra efforts.
- 21:02That make an extraordinary difference.
- 21:05It set small extra effort that the
- 21:08nurse makes at the bedside to check or
- 21:10double check the rate of the infusion pump.
- 21:13It is that extra time it takes
- 21:15to get a blanket or ice.
- 21:18Or that little,
- 21:19let little gesture that makes a
- 21:22difference for a patient who is
- 21:24in the hospital alone without
- 21:26contact with their family.
- 21:28And it's all of these small
- 21:30things that come together. 2.
- 21:32Create an outstanding experience
- 21:34and move our field forward.
- 21:36So I'll just say it again.
- 21:39I could not be.
- 21:40More impressed,
- 21:41more honored in more grateful.
