Origami Crane Instructions

 .
  • 00:00Hi, I'm Dana Farber.
  • 00:01I work for integrative medicine
  • 00:03at Smilow Cancer Hospital.
  • 00:04I'm the creative expression coordinator.
  • 00:07I'm gone. Dolly bop it.
  • 00:08I'm a designer and volunteer
  • 00:10at integrative medicine,
  • 00:11origami cranes have long
  • 00:12been a symbol of peace,
  • 00:14love, hope and healing.
  • 00:16During challenging times,
  • 00:17and we invite you to make a crane to add to
  • 00:20a larger installation within the hospital.
  • 00:22If you want to make your own crane,
  • 00:24we've put together a quick instructional
  • 00:26video and keep watching till the end of
  • 00:28the video to find out where and how.
  • 00:30Exactly,
  • 00:30you can send your own crates.
  • 00:34We're going to make a crane together.
  • 00:36You start with a square.
  • 00:38This is a 6 by 6.
  • 00:39We're using origami paper,
  • 00:41but you can use any type of
  • 00:43paper that you have at home as
  • 00:44long as it's not super thick.
  • 00:46You can use wrapping paper.
  • 00:47You can use magazine paper.
  • 00:50As long as it's a square and not too thick,
  • 00:53OK, so we'll walk you through.
  • 00:56Make sure that your folds are precise.
  • 00:58That will be easier to complete your project,
  • 01:02so we're just going to fold the
  • 01:03paper in half as our first fold.
  • 01:06I'm going to turn it this way and do
  • 01:07it because that's what I find easier.
  • 01:12And so you have the fold.
  • 01:14Then you're going to turn it
  • 01:15and do the same fold again.
  • 01:16So fold it in half the opposite direction.
  • 01:20Making sure that you stay very precise.
  • 01:28Now we want to make a fold
  • 01:30this way, so we're going to.
  • 01:32Make a triangle you triangle.
  • 01:35And you can use the fingers.
  • 01:36You can use a pen. You can use
  • 01:38a bone folder to help you make
  • 01:40those lines really, really crisp.
  • 01:46And now turn it in the
  • 01:48opposite direction. And
  • 01:49make another triangle.
  • 01:56We have a starburst pattern.
  • 02:03Now the next fold we want to
  • 02:06invert this side and this side,
  • 02:09so we're going to hold this.
  • 02:12So that it comes together.
  • 02:17Sometimes this one is a little tricky.
  • 02:19This is where your first folds
  • 02:21are really going to help you.
  • 02:23If. Breaking down super Chris.
  • 02:27Yeah, so it would look like it goes in
  • 02:28and then this thing with the other side.
  • 02:44So that your sides now are folded in.
  • 02:48And it would look like this.
  • 02:51And remember to keep the open
  • 02:53side towards you and the
  • 02:54folded side away from you.
  • 02:57So the next step, just make
  • 02:58sure go over your creases
  • 02:59and make sure that they're tight.
  • 03:00Yes, you're going to pull
  • 03:02just one piece of the side up,
  • 03:04and you're going to bring it
  • 03:05up and over, so not across.
  • 03:07Like that you don't want to do that.
  • 03:10You want to bring that up.
  • 03:12Almost like you're making a kite.
  • 03:16You can use that middle fold
  • 03:17to guide you. As well, and then the
  • 03:22same thing with the other side.
  • 03:23Just pull up one piece. And bring
  • 03:25it right to that middle guideline.
  • 03:30So that it looks like this.
  • 03:35And remember the openings will be
  • 03:36at the bottom here. Now flip it
  • 03:39over and repeat that step again.
  • 03:49Cranes are very symmetrical so will
  • 03:52be repeating this steps quite often.
  • 03:55So now it looks like this.
  • 03:58With your openings on the bottom.
  • 04:02I'm just taking my time
  • 04:04trying to get those folds very precise.
  • 04:09Now this top triangle.
  • 04:10Here we want to fold that down.
  • 04:16That'll be another line that we use,
  • 04:19and we can turn it around and fold
  • 04:20it in the opposite direction.
  • 04:28This next one is called a petal
  • 04:30fold and we're going to just pull
  • 04:32out one layer from each side.
  • 04:34So we're going to pull this one out.
  • 04:38And where that line was that we folded it,
  • 04:41it will help it to fold straight.
  • 04:44Back on itself and then the top,
  • 04:48we're going to refold that
  • 04:50the opposite direction.
  • 04:51So that it looks like this.
  • 05:01And then your other side
  • 05:02is waiting to be done.
  • 05:04So when you're ready,
  • 05:05flip it over and do the
  • 05:06same thing on the other
  • 05:07side. Just pull out that piece.
  • 05:12For that middle cold. In
  • 05:14the reverse these.
  • 05:27So these will be the start of
  • 05:29our wings and this bottom part
  • 05:31should be facing towards you.
  • 05:35And now that fold that we did
  • 05:36where we met the middle before
  • 05:37we're going to do that again.
  • 05:39So just pull up one side
  • 05:41and go right to the middle.
  • 05:43And fold it.
  • 05:48So I'm not folding it half, but I'm using
  • 05:50that line in the middle to guide my
  • 05:52fold, right correct?
  • 05:55And then do it the other side too.
  • 05:58Yeah, that middle line is very important.
  • 06:07Like mines not tight enough, but.
  • 06:11So you have one side done.
  • 06:13You'll flip it and do the
  • 06:14other side the same way,
  • 06:16bringing that to meet that
  • 06:19middle guideline. A nice crease.
  • 06:23And then the other side.
  • 06:38He still has that openings pointing
  • 06:40towards you. This you're going
  • 06:42to fold up and at an angle.
  • 06:47And then the other side up and at an angle.
  • 06:55I always turn it around and do
  • 06:57the same thing again because
  • 06:58I want that crease to be deep,
  • 07:00which makes it easier to work with.
  • 07:04So now inside the wings I'm going
  • 07:07to put my finger in here and pull
  • 07:11this up. Around to invert it.
  • 07:16Which could be a little tricky,
  • 07:17but then it just folds
  • 07:19that cruise that we
  • 07:20did just is helping me with that as well.
  • 07:26Almost folding on itself, isn't it?
  • 07:28Because mines not as straight as I'd like it,
  • 07:32I'm going to pick this side to be the head.
  • 07:34Yes, I'll pull that down a little.
  • 07:38And then do the same thing with the
  • 07:39other side, which will become the tail.
  • 08:04And then if you're mailing these in,
  • 08:06you could mail them in just
  • 08:08like this without opening them.
  • 08:10But if you're ready to see
  • 08:11what your crane looks like,
  • 08:12you just pull the wings
  • 08:13open and you have a crane.
  • 08:19That's my favorite part when
  • 08:21you just take the wings.
  • 08:27Right now.
