- 00:00Hi, my name is Marianne Davies.
- 00:03I'm an oncology nurse practitioner
- 00:05practicing at Smilow Cancer Hospital.
- 00:07My specialty is thoracic medical oncology.
- 00:09In addition to my work at
- 00:12the Smilow Cancer Hospital,
- 00:13I'm also on faculty at the Yale School
- 00:16of Nursing Teaching and coordinating the
- 00:18oncology Nurse Practitioner program.
- 00:20Getting the next generation of nurse
- 00:23practitioners ready to practice at smilow.
- 00:25A few years ago, I made a decision
- 00:28to expand my clinical footprint.
- 00:31In medical oncology,
- 00:32there were actually unique needs in
- 00:34other solid tumor areas that had
- 00:37expanding practices or clinical
- 00:39care needs for specific reasons.
- 00:41So I began to see patients for
- 00:44blocks of time with other diseases
- 00:47such as Gu malignancies, Melanoma,
- 00:50renal cell and GI cancers.
- 00:52This provided a unique opportunity for
- 00:54me to look at best practices across
- 00:58solid tumor and have an opportunity.
- 01:01To incorporate those best practices
- 01:03across the different clinics,
- 01:04and because of my years of
- 01:06experience at Smilow,
- 01:08had I had a good understanding of
- 01:10the systems that would allow us to
- 01:12enhance those best practices that in
- 01:14the long run improve overall patient
- 01:17outcomes across medical oncology.
- 01:19I think the greatest motivator for
- 01:21practice really is the patients we have
- 01:24a unique opportunity to meet patients
- 01:26from the time of their diagnosis through
- 01:29the trajectory of their illness.
- 01:31We really develop unique,
- 01:33close relationships with the
- 01:34patients and their families,
- 01:36and we have an opportunity to
- 01:38assist them at many different
- 01:40treatment decision points.
- 01:42So they are the greatest motivator and
- 01:45also the opportunity to participate
- 01:47in clinical trials where we have
- 01:49certainly seen the advances and
- 01:51movement of new treatment strategies
- 01:53forward and so that really is
- 01:56quite a unique opportunity.
- 01:58The other part that is really
- 02:01motivating is having an opportunity
- 02:03to work in an academic center where I
- 02:06have a chance to help mentor the next
- 02:09generation of oncology practitioners.
