MD-PhD House System

About the System

The House system was developed and launched by the MD-PhD Student Council just before the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. Its main goals are to 1) facilitate the vertical integration of students across all years in the program by providing a structured, non-academic setting for students to meet and establish consistent interactions between students who would not otherwise connect; 2) promote mental health and wellbeing by fostering a sense of community and support; 3) provide a framework for programmatic innovation by fostering student-run initiatives and friendly competition.

The Houses are integral to the program's efforts to ensure and promote an inclusive and supportive environment that allows students at all stages of personal and professional development to share their experiences. Four Houses, each with 35-40 students (2-4 of whom serve as Heads of House), each have a small budget to organize social activities at least twice per year. At the beginning of each academic year, first-year students are “sorted” and “inducted” into their houses at an even hosted by the students at the Yale Outdoor Education Center.
