Overview

Alexander Levy, MD, is a gastroenterologist who specializes in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a term that describes two chronic diseases of the digestive tract, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

The inflammation caused by IBD can lead to recurring abdominal pain, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and chronic fatigue. Uncontrolled IBD can cause long-term damage to the gastrointestinal tract, negatively impacting a patient’s quality of life.

Dr. Levy chose to care for patients with IBD for multiple reasons. “As an IBD provider we have the privilege of becoming long-term partners during a patient’s journey back to health.” While IBD can at times be challenging to treat, helping a patient discover the right treatment strategy and recapture their spirit is incredibly rewarding, he says. “We currently accept that IBD is a lifelong diagnosis, but it shouldn’t define our patients, nor limit their life aspirations.”

Dr. Levy provides the most advanced IBD care available that strives to meet individual needs. He incorporates a comprehensive treatment approach, working with a team of colorectal surgeons, nutritionists, psychiatrists, radiologists, and social workers with expertise in complex IBD. “When we are able treat early and aggressively, we can really help struggling patients get back to the activities they enjoy in life,” he says.

An assistant professor of medicine in digestive diseases at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Levy has research interests in perianal Crohn’s disease, nutrition, and complementary medicine for the treatment of IBD.
