The American College of Physicians (ACP) Internal Medicine Award is conferred each year to a graduating medical student from Yale School of Medicine (YSM) who plans to enter an internal medicine residency in Connecticut. YSM faculty members Barry Wu, MD, FACP, professor of medicine (geriatrics) and Nancy Angoff, MD, MPH, MEd, professor emerita of medicine (general medicine) established the award in 1999, in collaboration with faculty from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
Recipients are chosen by a committee based on their academic records, community service, membership status and participation in the ACP, and recommendations from the YSM Dean’s Office, advisors, and students. The recipient receives a certificate and $500 award at graduation.
“I’m delighted that a national organization is recognizing students at Yale who are pursuing internal medicine programs in Connecticut. I believe it is important to nurture students during their undergraduate medical education, so they feel supported and empowered in their future careers,” said Wu, chair of the ACP Connecticut Chapter Medical Student Committee.
The following ACP Internal Medicine awardees have stayed at YSM as residents, fellows, and faculty members, illustrating the ACP’s emphasis on fostering education, community, diversity, inclusion, and belonging in Connecticut:
- 2023: Kunal Potnis, MD, hospital resident
- 2021: Chang Su, MD, hospital resident
- 2020: Ysabel Ilagan-Ying, MD, fellow (digestive diseases)
- 2019: Rebecca Fine, MD, hospital resident
- 2003: Charles Dela Cruz, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine (pulmonary)
- 2002: Joyce Oen-Hsiao, MD, FACC, associate professor of clinical medicine (cardiovascular medicine)
Medical students can obtain a free ACP membership on the organization’s website. The ACP provides a wealth of educational resources for medical students including the Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program—a learning system that prepares fourth-year medical students for their board exams. Student members also have the opportunity to showcase their research at local and national scientific meetings and attend the annual ACP Internal Medicine Meeting.
