Currently, all treatment studies are being conducted virtually through Zoom video communication. However, some studies do require blood work that must be completed in person in Connecticut. You do not need to come to New Haven for blood work, any Quest Diagnostic in Connecticut is fine. Blood work is needed to assess for eligibility status and to monitor your health throughout the course of the study.
- Can I participate in the study from anywhere in the United States?
For teens – yes!
But for our adult studies, you need to do some study activities in Connecticut.
We will be able to talk more about this during your first phone call.
- Do I get paid for my participation?
Compensation is provided for all treatment studies. Amounts vary depending on the treatment study. You will get paid at various time points throughout the course of the study, generally when interviews are completed, but not for therapy sessions and not at the initial visit.
- How will my information be used?
All protected health information (PHI) including your name, address, and other identifying information will be kept confidential and separate from the data we collect. Data will be de-identified for all research purposes. Please note that your clinician will go overall confidentiality, risks, and benefits during the consent process.
- Some of our studies are testing medications. Are the medications safe?
All medications are FDA-approved and are therefore available from your own health care provider (if appropriate) if you choose not to participate in our studies. We will discuss the side effects and risks during the consent process. Please note, teen studies do not currently offer study medications. Please also note that some patients will be randomly assigned to have weekly talk therapy in addition to medication treatment.
- How do I sign up?
To sign up, please fill out your information in this survey. We then will contact you to schedule a phone screen. If it seems like the study is likely a good fit for you, we will schedule a consent and intake appointment with you to discuss next steps.
- What are phone screens?
A team member will reach out to you to schedule a phone screen. This is step one in our process and must be conducted on the phone. Phone screens will include answering brief questions about your eating behaviors, current and past medical and mental health concerns, and providing your contact information. If there are no eligibility concerns at this time point, you will then be scheduled for a consent appointment.
- Do you offer treatment on the weekends?
No. We operate Monday through Friday and can be available some evenings.
- How long are the studies?
Each study is different! On average, active treatment is 3-6 months.
- How long before I’m officially in the study?
Your first appointment with our research team is the consent where you will be informed about the design, and risks and benefits of the study. If you decide that the study is a good fit for you, then we will schedule an intake appointment. Eligibility will be determined following the intake and medical review, which range (on average) between 2 to 4 weeks following the intake.
- How will I know if I’m in the study?
Eligibility is complicated! We will let you know if you are eligible or ineligible after you meet with us and complete the intake process. If you have questions, you can also ask at any time.
- Can I pick up the study medication anywhere in the Northeast?
- We have one study medication that requires an in-person pick up which can only be picked up at our office in New Haven, Connecticut. We have another study medication that can be shipped to participants in most locations in the state of Connecticut. Medication options vary by treatment study and treatment stage.
- What happens if I’m not eligible?
Because we are a research clinic, our studies have strict criteria about who can be enrolled. If you are not eligible, we will do our best to provide you with referrals.
- I’m a teen. How do I sign up?
If you are interested in participating in our teen studies, you can email us at teenpower@yale.edu or call us (203-785-7210).
- Do I need my parent or guardian’s approval?
You will need your parent’s or legal guardian’s approval to enroll in the study. We can provide more information about this process during the first call with us, and we can help you talk with your parent about the study if you would like.
- I’m a parent or guardian. Can I sign my teen up for a study?
A parent or guardian is welcome to call us to complete the initial phone screen. During the first appointment, when we go over the details about the study, a parent and teen must be present and both must agree that the teen can be in the study.
