Shaukat Khan, MBBS, Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, is the new President of the Connecticut Psychiatric Society (CPS).
Khan, a staff psychiatrist at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven and Medical Director of Yale Behavioral Health Services in Hamden, assumed his new role May 23.
CPS is a district branch of the American Psychiatric Association and has nearly 750 members. It advocates for patients and those who care for them, promotes and disseminates professional values, supports education and career advancement, and strengthens the scientific basis of psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.
In his acceptance speech, Khan told CPS members assembled at the annual meeting that he has numerous goals for the next year. Among them:
I understand this is a serious responsibility and I look forward to working together as a team. I know that we’ll be able to accomplish the things we want to do, as we did in the past, for the greater good of our patients and protect our professional interests.

- Increase membership of CPS;
- Increase collaboration between CPS and other professional organizations and institutions in Connecticut;
- Increase visibility and communications for the organization, including the circulation of a regular newsletter and increased use of social media;
- Remain vigilant about legislative issues and take action as necessary;
- Increase involvement in community activities;
- Collect a history of CPS.
“In closing,” he said, “I have a long list of initiatives and I’ll work hard for CPS and for each of you, as I do when I take on any task. I understand this is a serious responsibility and I look forward to working together as a team. I know that we’ll be able to accomplish the things we want to do, as we did in the past, for the greater good of our patients and protect our professional interests.”
Khan is involved in other community activities. He serves as District Governor of Lions Club International, District 23A. During his tenure he has established three new clubs and has brought two Lions Clubs International Foundation grants to the district, including one to provide basic necessities such as food, bottled water, clothing, blankets, medicine, and other related items to victims of the severe weather that ravaged areas of Connecticut in May. Another grant was recently approved for the purposes of constructing an adaptive playground for the disabled in Naugatuck.
