- 00:00Good evening everyone.
- 00:01Really happy to have you all here we are.
- 00:04You know, doing this on a rainy
- 00:06day and we hope that it would
- 00:09matter less because it's virtual
- 00:10an I still hope that is the case.
- 00:13Similar to previous years.
- 00:14I hope that we do have people
- 00:16from all over Connecticut.
- 00:18I'm sorry that we can't see
- 00:20all of you face to face,
- 00:22but I hope it is just as spread out
- 00:24as it has been in previous years.
- 00:27And for those of you who are
- 00:29here for the first time.
- 00:31Who have not attended our events before?
- 00:34We have the we host the
- 00:37Refugee Health Conference.
- 00:38It's usually a three and a half
- 00:42hour half day event always on the.
- 00:45Yale Department of Internal Medicine,
- 00:47Global Health Day.
- 00:48So the timing is usually now,
- 00:50except it's longer and we have to
- 00:52cancel last year for obvious reasons.
- 00:55That was when the pandemic was going,
- 00:57so we did not host the session
- 00:59and we were hoping that we would
- 01:02be back to do our full session
- 01:04in the fall or the spring.
- 01:06But since many of our pandemic
- 01:08restrictions continue,
- 01:09we're doing this as a virtual
- 01:11event and in some ways I think
- 01:14it's a good thing because.
- 01:15It I think makes it accessible
- 01:18to more people.
- 01:20But this is,
- 01:21this would be actually our sixth year.
- 01:24But because we missed last year,
- 01:26this is our fifth annual conference and
- 01:29we'll see where the next year goes.
- 01:32And maybe we'll have like a really
- 01:34big event and make it an in person
- 01:375th annual Refugee Health Conference.
- 01:40So just very briefly again,
- 01:42for those of you who may not know the
- 01:45structure of our clinics locally,
- 01:47we have the adult refugee clinic.
- 01:50And we have the pediatric refugee clinic.
- 01:52And you already heard the providers
- 01:54that are involved myself.
- 01:55Doctor Brian Brown and Doctor Camille Brown.
- 01:58What we do is we see.
- 02:04Many of the. People who are coming to
- 02:08New Haven actually all the knew refugees
- 02:10that have come through the US refugee
- 02:13resettlement program through our partner.
- 02:16That's the integrated refugee and
- 02:18immigrant service that Cyrus so
- 02:20we work with them and we try to
- 02:23provide health care for everybody.
- 02:25That's coming here starting with
- 02:27their initial intake and their
- 02:29first domestic health exam.
- 02:30And then we integrate them
- 02:32into our clinics and there,
- 02:34followed by various providers
- 02:36across the system.
- 02:38And that fundamental structure
- 02:39remains true today.
- 02:40There have been some changes locali
- 02:43because of some transition in primary
- 02:45care within the greater New Haven area.
- 02:47We used to be based at Yale,
- 02:50New Haven Hospital.
- 02:51Now we are more based at the local,
- 02:54federally qualified health centers.
- 02:55Both the Colonel Scott Hill Health Center
- 02:59and the Fairhaven Health care system.
- 03:01And they are now our new partners in
- 03:04providing health care access to refugees.
- 03:07But I won't go more into specifics
- 03:10because I think every clinic does
- 03:13it differently across Connecticut.
- 03:15But you know, fundamentally,
- 03:17our mission is the same to provide
- 03:20clinical care for refugees,
- 03:22to include education for trainees
- 03:24as part of a refugee care,
- 03:27and then also support any other.
- 03:30Research endeavors that trainees
- 03:32or other faculty might have,
- 03:34but primarily we really strive to
- 03:36provide excellent clinical care,
- 03:37so I'll stop there,
- 03:39and then I'll hand it over to
- 03:42Maya who will actually talk.
- 03:44About where we stand with refugee
- 03:47resettlement both here and nationally.
