INFORMATION FOR

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Who can apply?

Yale undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines as well as trainees are eligible and encouraged to apply. Some job descriptions may require applicants to be at a graduate level and/or may require certain skills, abilities, or language proficiency.

I am graduating in May. Can I apply?

No. Applicants must be enrolled at Yale during the entire duration of the fellowship program and must also be returning as a student or trainee in the fall. The program fosters a cohort experience, inclusive of a fall closing event. In addition, it is a Yale requirement that students who receive summer funding return to the university.

When can I expect to be interviewed?

Applications will be reviewed by YIGH staff. For those selected to advance for interviews with placements organizations, application packets will be sent to 1-2 organizations for review. Organizations will select which applicants they interview. Timelines for interviews will vary depending on the organization. Placements ideally will be finalized by the end of March.

What is the time commitment required of participants?

All Fellows should expect to commit a minimum of 10 weeks full-time for their placement. Students should consult with their school or department to ensure the fellowship fulfills any credit or internship requirements.

Can I get credit for my internship?

It is the student’s responsibility to complete any paperwork or other requirements to receive credit. YSPH students should coordinate with the Office of Public Health Practice if the internship is to fulfill their APE. YIGH does not facilitate ensuring the fellowship fulfills specific programmatic requirements to receive credit.

Will placements be remote or in-person?

Placement location and work hours are determined by the organization, and through conversation with the Fellow. Some organizations require Fellows to be on-site throughout the entire fellowship, some are remote with the option to visit the office, and others are hybrid. Please refer to the job descriptions for what is preferred or required by each organization.

Is there funding support to participate in this program?

In partnership with the Jackson School of Global Affairs, the Yale School of Public Health Office of Career Management, and the Yale School of Nursing Office of Global Engagement and Planetary Health, YIGH provides and coordinates funding to support costs including travel, housing, and food. The final stipend amount reflects the placement location. YIGH will review and approve budgets prepared by each Fellow that includes anticipated costs for their placement. Fellows are responsible for any costs incurred above their final stipend amount. The final stipend amount reflects the placement location:

    • Full Remote: up to $5000
    • Domestic (full in-person or hybrid): up to $7000
    • International (full in-person or hybrid): up to $9,000
What other support can we expect from YIGH?

To prepare for the internship, Fellows will participate in a one-day orientation focused on building relationships within the group, learning about the institutional landscape in global health and discussing key concepts leadership and professional integrity. Throughout the summer, Fellows will participate in reflection sessions to share their experience and receive support from the program staff. In addition to the scheduled reflection sessions, YIGH program staff are available to support Fellows outside of these sessions as needed. The program concludes in the early fall with a final gathering to share insights and lessons learned.

What support can we expect from our placement organizations?

Fellows will have a job description and expected deliverables. Fellows can also expect high-quality professional mentoring and support from their host organizations.
