Intermediate Arousal is Optimal for High S/N in Sensory Evoked Responses
Whole cell recording of synaptic responses to repeated presentation of complex sound stimuli while the animal transitioned from intermediate to high arousal. The Red trace represents a response to sound at intermediate arousal. The Green trace represents the response to the same sound at high arousal. The two responses are overlaid for comparison. Note how the S/N (evoked over spontaneous) synaptic response to the same sound is reduced with high arousal, owing in large part to the increase in spontaneous synaptic barrages.
