NE and ACh are two of the main components of the ascending and descending activating systems that control state of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Variations in activity of these control pathways contributes to the large on-going variations in state that cause approximately half of the trial-to-trial variations in sensory evoked responses and decision making responses.
