Biography

As a nurse practitioner with Yale Internal Medicine Associates (YIMA), Jessica Kaslow, MSN, MPH, says she enjoys getting to know patients and addressing their concerns.

“I see a lot of urgent and same-day cases, which means the visits are very focused and rewarding,” Kaslow says. “I enjoy that sense of satisfaction in either immediately recognizing the problem and knowing the solution, or connecting them quickly to the next steps such as lab work or referring to a specialist.”

Kaslow’s path to nursing was circuitous. In college, she thought about the career of nurse practitioner but ended up working in environmental public health. “I realized that the best part of my job was not long projects, but the personal connections that occurred during individual interviews I conducted with subjects and community members,” Kaslow says of her decision to return to school for her nursing degree.

“I love reassuring patients, sometimes being able to tell them that they are not the only ones experiencing something,” Kaslow adds. “I will look up information with them in the room and give them handouts; I like to add education to the visit to explain what is happening to them and why we are taking certain steps.”
