New Season, New Academic Year, New Interns

June 20, 2017

Hello everyone,

Tomorrow is the summer solstice, the start of a new academic year, and the beginning of our interns’ careers.

To our departing interns: thank you for an exceptional year. Let’s acknowledge your accomplishments. Over the year, you learned the skills needed to launch your careers. You can now admit patients to the hospital, write thoughtful notes, address emergencies, diagnose complex illnesses, and perform many procedures on your own. You comforted countless patients, learned a ton, and supported your colleagues. Beyond surviving, you thrived, and we couldn’t be more proud of you. To our preliminary, anesthesia, and psychiatry interns, thank you for your contributions. It’s been a pleasure. Best wishes for great success as you move on to your specialties. To our categorical interns, enjoy your mini-vacation, get some rest and we’ll see you back on Friday. It’s time for you to lead!

To our new interns: See the paragraph above- that’s what you can look forward to. We’re so excited to welcome you into our residency family. You’re as talented as any class we’ve ever recruited to Yale and there isn’t a doubt in my mind that each of you will thrive. You will learn more over the next 12 months than you ever have in your lives, and your residents and faculty are ready to support you. Just work hard, put your patients first, embrace the challenge of recognizing how much there is to learn, take care of yourselves and each other, and have fun. You’re going to be phenomenal.

Let’s get started.

Mark
