Here Come the Applicants

Hi everyone,

This morning, we’re going to pause The Feedback Series, since I’m awash in residency applications. Here are the numbers, broken down by US, international (IMG), and underrepresented in medicine (URiM):

  • Total applicants: 4989
    • US: 2850
    • IMG: 2155
    • URiM: 799
  • Categorical: 3907
    • US: 2079
    • IMG: 1838
    • URiM: 626
  • Physician Scientist: 419
    • US: 180
    • IMG: 242
    • URiM: 62
  • Preliminary: 1190
    • US: 754
    • IMG: 442
    • URiM: 202

For those of you checking my math, you’re right, the numbers don’t add up. Some students train in both the US and abroad. Some apply to multiple tracks. And the numbers are huge.

We plan to interview approximately 400 categorical applicants and 75 physician scientists (preliminary applicants don’t need to interview). The goal is to send out interview invitations by Monday, October 10. Until then, I’ll be doing lots of reading…

Enjoy your Sunday, everyone,

Mark

PS From an equity perspective, residency recruitment is not that different from college admissions. Unfortunately, many students from top-tier schools get special treatment because of historic connections as well as back door communications. This year, as always, we will ensure all applicants get a fair shot, no matter who they are or where they come from.
