Choose the Chiefs

January 19, 2019

Hi everyone, We’re having an extraordinary academic year. Morning reports are great, noon conferences are strong, the resident schedule was well-prepared, and morale is high. For all this, let’s thank our Chiefs.

Choosing Chief Residents is especially hard in a program with so much talent. Thankfully, we have options.

As we do every year, we need your help choosing five future Chiefs, this time for 2020-21. Please nominate up to five candidates from the PGY2 class and tell us why they should lead our program:

The ideal candidates would be smart, hardworking, enthusiastic, generous, creative, and kind. They need to show commitment to our mission and to trainee well-being. They need to be organized and reliable. They need to be good listeners and confidantes. They need to be role models.

The Chiefs will make schedules, recruit interns, plan noon conferences, attend on the floors and in clinic, run report, foster wellness, and troubleshoot, troubleshoot, troubleshoot.

The Chiefs set the tone for our program. Who should they be?

Your input will help us choose candidates to interview. Tell us why your nominee should be Chief. What makes them special? Why are you endorsing them?

If you think someone should not be a Chief, tell us why. That input is crucial too. Please include your name on the survey so I can call you if questions arise. Beyond that, your input will stay confidential.

We’re aiming to choose Traditional Chiefs by late February. We’ll also be working with Dr. Brienza to choose a COE Chief and with Dr. Merchant to choose a VA Chief for Quality and Safety (the CRQS). If you are interested in any of these positions, feel free to tell me. Finally, if you don’t want to be considered, let me know that too. Otherwise, except for our short trackers, Jeremy Jacox and David Schoenfeld, all PGY2s are eligible.

Our program functions best when we make big decisions together. That’s how we chose this year’s phenomenal Chiefs. Let’s do it again for 2020-21. The deadline for completing the survey is January 31.

Stay warm, everyone!

“Wild Geese”

-Mary Oliver

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.
