Celebrating the Match

March 19, 2023
by Mark David Siegel

Hi everyone:

I’m a social media skeptic. Though I’ve had a Twitter account for years, I just recently learned how to post a thread. I’m also not a fan of humblebragging or faux outrage. But that said, Twitter surely lived up to its potential on Friday after we posted our Match List. As of this morning, we’ve had more than 217,000 views, accompanied by celebrations, congratulations, and invitations to write, collaborate, and build community.

This year’s class will be our most diverse ever. Nearly a quarter of the interns identify as underrepresented in medicine and more than a third trained internationally. As Sofia Cruz observed, we’ve added “many new flags” to our family, with interns from Ethiopia, Egypt, Pakistan, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, South Korea, Australia, Ireland, and Lebanon. Just imagine the ideas and perspectives they’ll bring.

The interns are diverse in other ways too. Their class includes scientists and experts in policy and global health. They include painters, cooks, musicians, singers, dancers, poets, athletes, gardeners, rock climbers, and world travelers. Each intern was a stellar student and their Step scores are spectacular. They’ll be teaching us.

Since Friday, I’ve read heartwarming expressions of gratitude, but the gratitude is ours- that these talented, inspiring young doctors chose to train here. For this, I thank the faculty, fellows, residents, and staff who comprise this community, dedicated to advancing science, clinical care, and education. You make the world a better place, and our new interns will make it even better.

In next weekend’s PD Note, the interns will introduce themselves, so stay tuned!

Enjoy your Sunday, everyone. I’m heading out into the sunshine.

Mark

PS A Happy Nowruz this week to those who celebrate! Heide’s teaching a Persian class tonight, so I’ll be savoring leftovers.

P.P.S. Special thanks to Julie Parry and Amy Anderson in the Communications Office for creating this magnificent montage:
