Training Workshops and Visits

Intensive Summer Research Training: Summer 2024:

In summer 2024, GEOHealth-MENA trainees traveled to Yale to complete the summer intensive research program. This workshop consisted of 21 full-day sessions covering topics such as:

  • Advanced research methods (working with large datasets, geospatial methods for health research, machine learning in low-and-middle income countries)
  • Research Data Management
  • Data visualization,
  • Grant writing
  • 2-day scientific writing workshop
  • Curriculum in Faculty Mentorship and Leadership
  • Professional development topics
  • Rigor and Reproducibility of Research
  • Sex and Gender as a Biological Variable
  • Responsible Conduct of Research.

Additionally, trainees traveled to the University of Iowa for completion of occupational health and safety training through the Agricultural Safety and Health: The Core Course. Through online and in-person training modules, the course provided theoretical training, field visits, and hands-on exposure to injury prevention in agricultural work environments. Given that agricultural workers are the main study population in the U01 research project, this workshop strengthened the students’ skills set and prepared them to carry out their research projects on this study population.

MS and PhD scholarship awardees (funded by the U2R) are encouraged to link their research projects to the core U01 research project or to agricultural practices and health and safety. The trainees are also expected to help in translating the material into Arabic and contextualizing it to Lebanon and the MENA region.

Implementation Science Primer June 2023

GEOHealth-MENA collaborated with the Middle East and North Africa Program for Advanced Injury Research (MENA PAIR) to organize and host a 3-day Implementation Science Primer Workshop at the American University of Beirut (AUB) from June 13 to June 15, 2023. This training workshop provided a comprehensive program feauturing informative sessions and interactive activities dedicated to the field of implementation science.

The event, led by Drs. Fredrick Altice (Yale University), Tamar Kabakian, and Samar Al-Hajj (American University of Beirut), brought together a diverse group of 32 participants, including faculty members, research assistants, and students from local academic and research institutions in Lebanon, such as GEOHealth-MENA, MENA PAIR, AUB Faculty of Health Sciences, AUB Faculty of Nursing, and Balamand University.

This workshop facilitated meaningful discussions and provided valuable feedback from experts in the field, contributing to the participants' professional growth and the advancement of implementation science research. It also encouraged the adoption of implementation science principles to advance the trainees’ ongoing research efforts.
