Elective Opportunities & Research

The faculty of the Yale Emergency Medicine Residency Program is aware of the importance of research and elective time for the pursuit of interests in both the academic and clinical arenas. As adult learners, we recognize the importance of tailoring your education to your individual desires and needs. With ample elective time, each resident can create the educational experience which is best for them. Essentially, no two residents in Yale EM complete the exact same residency.

Although Yale New Haven Hospital provides electives in virtually every medical and surgical specialty, residents may also arrange elective time at other major medical centers. In addition, many opportunities exist to create and pursue elective experiences through the Yale School of Epidemiology and Public Health, the Yale School of Organization and Management, and the Yale Law School.

Those with interests in global health have the opportunity to travel to medically underserved and underdeveloped areas both inside and outside the United States. Funding for international electives is available through the Johnson and Johnson Physician Scholars in International Health Program as well as other programs. Additionally, a fully funded global health ultrasound elective is available through Naya Health in Nepal.

Research is a key component in Yale emergency medicine resident education. Each resident is required to complete at least one original research project prior to graduation. These research projects are often done in collaboration with Emergency Medicine faculty. There is extensive research mentoring as well as grant writing and statistical support.

Yale emergency medicine residents have presented their research at every major regional and national emergency medicine conferences.
