Fellow Focus in Four: Omar Alani, Nephrology

October 28, 2024

Meet Yale clinical fellow Omar Alani, MD, who has gained insights through COVID-19 studies in kidney transplant patients, among other research.

Why did you pursue a career in medicine?

As a child, I witnessed health care providers make a difference in patients’ lives and stop people’s suffering. This sparked the idea of becoming a physician. I’ve always had a desire to help people. Once I entered medical school and started learning about the anatomy and physiology of the human body, I found the mystery of how the body operates amazing. From there, I learned the pathology when there is deviation from normal, how to investigate the complex multiple processes involved, and how to treat them. It’s an indescribable feeling knowing that because of you, someone who was near death is back with their loved ones, happy and enjoying life.

Why did you choose Yale Department of Internal Medicine for your fellowship?

I am interested in kidney disease and have worked in kidney transplant research, so I was looking for a place that trains leaders in nephrology. My first and best interview for a nephrology fellowship was at Yale. After the interview, I knew I would thrive at Yale, where the faculty are knowledgeable, friendly, and enjoy teaching. I had multiple interviews after that, but Yale checked every box on my list.

Nephrology is a unique specialty, and Yale is where I can advance my passion and refine my skills to become one of the best nephrologists.

Tell us about your research and career goals.

I have participated in several transplant studies, including COVID-19 studies in transplant patients. Working on research related to kidney transplants has exposed me to the significant challenges patients face post-transplant and highlighted the importance of advancing treatment protocols. Currently, my focus is on exploring innovative approaches to chronic kidney disease treatment. My long-term goal is to integrate clinical practice with research in the field of nephrology to contribute to improving patient care.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I love cars and motorcycles, basically anything on wheels.
