Yale’s Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine (Yale-PCCSM), within the Department of Internal Medicine, is featured in a 16-part docuseries created by the American Thoracic Society (ATS) about the society’s commitment to advancing global respiratory health.
In the video “Compassion and Collaboration to Treat Pulmonary Disease,” Yale PCCSM members give insights into how the community, culture, equity, and work-life balance of Yale-PCCSM serve as the foundations of their success in providing outstanding patient care, cutting edge research, and rigorous but tailored education. Each of these pillars in part of the section’s and Department of Internal Medicine’s mission, of which Yale-PCCSM is one of the eleven sections.
“Teamwork is what makes our section unique but I think it is also what makes Yale unique and special,” explains Jennifer Possick, MD, director, Winchester Center for Lung Disease.
A culture of collaboration and excellence is woven into the section’s work and its multidisciplinary approach to patient care. “We have outstanding programs in critical care, interventional pulmonary medicine, interstitial lung disease programs, sleep, COPD, asthma, lung cancer, pulmonary vascular disease, lung infections, and cystic fibrosis,” said Section Chief Naftali Kaminski, MD, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Professor of Medicine (Pulmonary). “In every one of these [programs], we have master clinicians, physician scientists and clinician educators working together – it is best for our patients.”
Faculty featured in the video are Vivian Asare, MD; Charles Dela Cruz, MD, PhD; Jose Gomez, MD, MS; Shyoko Honiden, MD; Kaminski; Possick; and Jonathan Siner, MD.
“Compassion and Collaboration to Treat Pulmonary Disease” is one of the videos in the docuseries that highlight Yale-PCCSM’s work. The second video, “Mapping Technology Supports Pulmonary Fibrosis Patients,” details its work in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
