Use of Photos and Videos Taken during Yale School of Medicine Events and Activities

At which YSM events can I expect to be photographed or recorded?
At any event or activity sponsored by YSM or a YSM department you can expect to see photography and/or video teams at work. Please know that only University-authorized personnel are permitted to photograph or film in or on campus locations. For more information regarding photography and filming at the University, please see additional guidelines and requirements available at the Yale Office of Public Affairs & Communications.
Will I be told in advance if I am going to be photographed or recorded?

At Commencement, White Coat Ceremony, and at other such events with large gatherings of the YSM community, photos or videos may be taken and shared publicly by YSM staff as part of the general coverage and reporting of the event.

For other types of YSM events and gatherings, YSM follows the guidelines and requirements regarding photography and filming at the Yale Office of Public Affairs & Communications.

What will photos and recordings be used for?

YSM and the university will use/distribute these materials in support of the university’s research, education, and patient care mission, unless otherwise specifically notified by YSM in advance.

Can I photograph or record patients at Yale?
Patients cannot be filmed or photographed without consulting the guidance provided by the HIPAA Privacy Office . Patients sign an Authorization for Media and/or YNHHS/Yale Photographs, Videotaping and Interviews form before any filming, recording, or promotion.
Are there permission forms for people to sign?
Does Yale have a policy about video recording?
I have other questions!
Please contact the YSM Office of Communications at ysm.editor@yale.edu with any additional questions.
