YCSC Grand Rounds: Development of a Culturally Congruent Relationship-Based Intervention for Latino/a/e Families

Yale Child Study Center

Session Description

Jessica Borelli, PhD will provide an overview of relational savoring—a brief, strengths-based prevention and intervention approach that involves helping parents savor moments of close connection with their child. She will describe how relational savoring can be used to enhance relationship outcomes in parents and families, and will review the theoretical background underlying the relational savoring approach, as well as the research evidence supportive of this approach.

Borelli will also discuss her work adapting this intervention for use with low-income Latino/a immigrant families in partnership with Latino Health Access, a community health agency in Orange County, and will present the results of an effectiveness trial in which promotores de salud delivered a co-developed version of the intervention to community members. Finally, she will discuss current work on adapting relational savoring to meet the needs of this and other underserved communities. This presentation will integrate research and clinical material.

The learning objectives for this session are for participants to be able to:

  • summarize the theoretical principles and phases of relational savoring
  • describe the research base supporting relational savoring
  • describe the process of culturally adapting relational savoring
