Education
The Department of Internal Medicine has a long-standing tradition of excellence in training practitioners, educators, and/or investigators in the broad field of internal medicine, as well as its specialties and subspecialties. Many former internal medicine trainees are now in leadership roles at Yale and abroad. As the largest department of Yale School of Medicine, and the largest clinical service of Yale New Haven Hospital, the department proudly plays a major role in the educational missions of both institutions.
At the student level, the department actively participates in many pre-clinical courses and is responsible for highly successful inpatient and primary care clerkship components as well as sub-internships. In addition, many clinical and research electives are offered to students.
In postgraduate training, the department offers four residency programs with 245+ residents and 35+ fellowship programs. Most of our fellowship programs are supported by NIH training grants which allows for support of many department fellows during their research training. For information on specific fellowships, visit the Fellowships page.
In addition, the Department of Internal Medicine has major responsibilities for the design and administration of other programs such as the National Clinical Scholars Program and the Investigative Medicine Program.
The Department of Internal Medicine provides many other educational programs. Visit the Other Education Programs/Resources tab to learn more.
