In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, Black and Hispanic patients nationwide were far likelier to die than white patients. Yet a bright spot occurred at Yale. Not only was the mortality rate throughout Yale New Haven Health in the pandemic’s first two years lower than the national average, but also no race-based survival differences occurred among discharged patients. The Department of Internal Medicine recently convened a summit to review those achievements and plan for future success.

Three more faculty members received Distinguished Clinical Career Awards.

In September, a summit was held at Yale University to share the findings of a validation study conducted across seven countries on the Remote Assessment of Learning (ReAL) tool, which was designed in 2021 to assess literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional skills in children ages 5–14 in remote learning environments.

Ananth Gives Plenary Talk at International Pediatric Palliative Care Conference
Prasanna Ananth, MD, MPH, associate professor of pediatrics (hematology oncology), gave a plenary talk this month in Rome at the 6th Maruzza International Congress on Pediatric Palliative Care, which was organized to discuss potential future developments related to palliative care at a global level.
Aragona Becomes System Medical Director for YNHHS Well Newborn Units
Elena Aragona, MD, MS, assistant professor of pediatrics (hospital medicine), has been named the system medical director for Yale New Haven Health's (YNHHS) Well Newborn Units. She will continue her role as Well Newborn Nursery director at York Street while expanding her duties to include oversight and collaboration with the well newborn sites at Bridgeport Hospital and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.
Constable Is Appointed to BRAIN Working Group
Todd Constable, PhD, Elizabeth Mears and House Jameson Professor of Radiology & Biomedical Imaging and professor of neurosurgery, was recently appointed to serve as the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) representative on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Brain Research Through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) multi-council working group. The group provides oversight of the long-term scientific vision of the NIH BRAIN Initiative, and serves as a forum for initial "concept clearance" of new initiatives before they are funded.
Corbin-Stein Earns an NIH D-SPAN Award
Nicole Corbin-Stein, PhD, postdoctoral associate in the Le Zhang lab in neurology, recently received a K00 NIH Blueprint and BRAIN Initiative D-SPAN (Diversity Specialized Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Advancement in Neuroscience) Award, a grant that supports the transition of graduate students into neuroscience research postdoctoral positions. Corbin-Stein's research focuses on how T cells contribute to the disease mechanisms in prodromal Parkinson’s disease.
Lattanza Earns Distinguished Alumni Award From Medical Alma Mater
Lisa Lattanza, MD, chair and Ensign Professor of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation, recently received the Distinguished Alumni Award from her medical school, the Medical College of Ohio, now known as the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences. In this video, Lattanza reflected on her life’s work, what influenced her early career, and her legacy. She also delivered Distinguished Alumni Grand Rounds titled "Breaking Barriers and Embracing Authenticity: Transforming Surgical Culture to Foster Inclusive Excellence."
Rice Receives Mentor of the Year Award
Tyler Rice, PhD, postdoctoral fellow in pediatrics (neonatology), has won the Mentor of the Year Award from the Department of Immunobiology.
Singh Becomes Leader of Yale Comprehensive Epilepsy Center
Anuradha Singh, MD, professor of neurology and of neurosurgery, is the new clinical chief and director of the Yale Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. Singh comes to Yale after serving as director of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and vice chair of outreach at the Neurology Division of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
Three From YSM Receive Grants From Brain & Behavior Research Foundation
Terril L. Verplaetse, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry; Heather Snell, PhD, assistant professor of neuroscience; and Zachary Harvanek, MD, PhD, assistant professor of psychiatry, are among 150 early career scientists worldwide who have received Young Investigator Grants from the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation. The scientists honored are seeking to identify causes, improve treatments, and develop methods of prevention for psychiatric illnesses that impact millions of people in the United States and throughout the world.
Yip Is Elected to APT Foundation Board of Directors
Sarah Yip, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry, has been elected to the board of directors of the APT Foundation in New Haven. The foundation promotes health and recovery for those who live with substance use disorders and/or mental illness. It was founded in 1970 by members of the Yale Department of Psychiatry and is among the oldest treatment programs in the United States. Yip uses neuropsychiatric research methods to identify the biological mechanisms of addictions and other psychiatric disorders.
