Amir Garakani, MD, DFAPA, associate professor of psychiatry, will be honored as the 2025 Champion for Recovery by Laurel House, a nonprofit organization based in Stamford.
Garakani, chair of psychiatry and behavioral health at Greenwich Hospital, is being recognized for his excellence in psychiatric treatment and research.
The award will be presented at a ceremony April 26, 2025, when Garakani and others will be recognized by Laurel House.
Laurel House helps individuals and families in Fairfield and Westchester counties achieve and sustain mental health. Its core purpose is social inclusion, early intervention, and recovery.
Since becoming chair in 2021, Garakani has overseen the development and launching of the Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and Adult Mood and Anxiety Disorders IOPs at Greenwich Hospital.
Additionally, in 2024, Greenwich Hospital Psychiatry, with the support of Yale, began offering electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), intravenous ketamine and intranasal esketamine for patients with treatment-resistant depression and other psychiatric disorders.
Garakani has participated in numerous research studies and is first or co-author on over 90 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American College of Psychiatrists and Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry.
