Biography

Dr. Vaz graduated from Faculdade Ciências Médicas de Minas Gerais, nestled among the mountains of his hometown of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He then moved to Boston, where he joined the Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute as a postdoctoral research fellow, studying mechanisms of response and resistance to immunotherapy and targeted therapies in non-small cell lung cancer. He subsequently completed his Internal Medicine residency at Mount Auburn Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, before joining Yale for fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

At Yale, Dr. Vaz has continued to develop his passion for the procedural side of pulmonary and critical care medicine, with his clinical interests increasingly converging at the intersection of Interventional Pulmonology and Thoracic Oncology. He is particularly interested in advanced bronchoscopy and minimally invasive approaches to the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of thoracic malignancies. He plans to pursue advanced training in Interventional Pulmonology, bringing together his enthusiasm for procedures with his longstanding background in thoracic oncology.

His passion for procedures has also grown into a commitment to medical education and Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS). He is currently leading an initiative at Yale to develop a longitudinal curriculum that trains incoming Internal Medicine interns in ultrasound-guided vascular access, with the goal of fostering procedural confidence and competence from the earliest stages of residency.

Outside the hospital, Dr. Vaz is an avid amateur triathlete, high-altitude mountaineer, chess aficionado, and enthusiastic traveler. He also enjoys playing the guitar, tending to his orchids, and chilling with his Bengal cat, Samba.
