Associate Program Director

Welcome!

Thank you for spending time getting to know us. I am also a graduate of this fellowship, and people often ask why I stayed. The honest answer is that I found something here I didn't want to leave: a program that tailored to my learning style, and a culture where relationships between patients and colleagues mattered. I felt I would grow more here in 10 years than I would anywhere else in 20. I graduated in 2021, and I'm happy to say that has held true.

That sense of belonging came from the people of our program. Whether it’s knocking on another attending’s office door down the hall to ask a question, stopping by the inpatient Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) office during a challenging day, or sitting in the back office with the outpatient nurses and social workers to think through a complex case, interdisciplinary care is lived here — in how we care for patients and for each other.

As an Associate Program Director, what I care most about is that fellows graduate feeling ready. This is not just being clinically prepared, but ready to begin growing into the HPM physician they want to be. Whether your career goals are clinical, research, teaching-focused, or a mix of them all, your curiosity is welcome here, and we will work with you to help you get there. We try to give fellows the right balance of guidance and autonomy to make that possible with space for reflection built in, because becoming an excellent hospice and palliative medicine clinician and growing as a person are not separate goals.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions about me or our program. Our favorite response is "tell me more."

Best,
Alex Choi, MD
