    Biography

    Most recently, Dr. Gulanski served as Site Investigator at VA Connecticut Healthcare System for the NIH funded GRADE Study (Glycemic Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study), a multi-center nationwide randomized study to determine the best combination of glucose-lowering medications for management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. She is an investigator at the Clinical Epidemiology Research Center (CERC) at VA Connecticut Healthcare System, a sub-investigator on the “Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-controlled, Phase 2/3 Study to Assess the Efficacy and Safety of Setrusumab in Subjects with Osteogenesis Imperfecta” protocol and a co-investigator on a VA HSR&D study “Understanding Suicide Risks Among LGBT Veterans in VA Care”. 

    Soon after joining the Yale faculty, she was a member of the grant writing team for the initial Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) which was awarded to Yale in 2006 and which supports the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI). She was a member of the National CTSA Participant and Clinical Interaction Steering Committee, NCRR/NIH, and served as Director of the Yale New Haven Hospital Research Unit (HRU) until 2009. From 2008-2016, she was the Associate Director, Diabetes Research Center (DRC) Translational Research Core. Her other administrative roles include, among others, Section Chief for Endocrinology at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System (2000-2005, 2009-2013), Chair, Section of Endocrinology Diversity Task Force (2019-2021), and she currently serves as Associate Chief for Education, Yale Section of Endocrinology.  She has been an active member of the Status of Women in Medicine (SWIM) Executive Committee since 2018. 

    Her clinical interests include metabolic bone disease and transgender care. She is a clinician at the Yale Bone Center. At Yale Health, she helped to develop a multidisciplinary transgender medicine program to provide integrated care for individuals seeking gender affirming care.

    After retiring from Yale in 2017, she returned and maintains a clinical practice at the Yale Bone Center and is active in clinical research studies and teaching at Yale and VA Connecticut.

    Overview

    Barbara Gulanski, MD, MPH, is an endocrinologist specializing in the treatment of bone disorders, such as juvenile osteoporosis, early-onset osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, Paget's disease of bone, and osteoporosis-related spinal compression fractures. She is the associate chief for education in Endocrinology.

    Dr. Gulanski’s research interests include diabetes management and treatment, cardiometabolic risk factors, bone health and fracture risk, digital health and exercise interventions, and the relationship between diabetes and cognitive performance.
