Academic Advising

Yale School of Medicine provides a strong network of support for each student’s academic progress from matriculation through graduation and beyond. The associate dean for student affairs and your head of advisory house are knowledgeable about the Yale System of Medical Education, as well as curriculum and graduation requirements. They are informed and up to date about student assessment, board examinations, clerkship/sub-internship/elective/away rotations, research time and the thesis requirement, MD-PhD and other joint or dual degrees, fifth-year options, and extracurricular opportunities. They are a valuable resource who will follow your academic and professional performance and will offer guidance and feedback throughout your time at Yale.

They will also collaborate closely with:

  • The academic support team that provides performance improvement through the director of performance improvement, learning specialists, and peer tutoring;
  • Six longitudinal coaches per advisory house who closely support your professional development and reviewing individual progress in meeting the milestones toward attaining YSM's nine MD Program competencies.
  • Leaders of residency programs, the Office of Student Research, the Office of Curriculum, Student Mental Health & Wellness, the MD-PhD Program, Student Accessibility Services (SAS), the Chaplain’s Office, and the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, Community Engagement, and Equity (DICE).
