Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Update (November 2020)

Two weeks ago, The Barthwell Group gave us the updated department strategic plan for our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, which I briefly presented yesterday in the 11/9/20 Faculty Meeting.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this process. 67 faculty and trainees provided input in addition to section chiefs, vice chairs, and other department leaders. We value your contributions and insights.

The plan has five total overall goals:

  1. Enhance recruitment and retention
  2. Recognize the importance of DEI activities in terms of professional recognition
  3. Increase long-term DEI education and professional development efforts
  4. Ensure DEI accountability
  5. Ensure DEI transparency

Each goal has numerous objectives so I urge that you review the plan in detail.

We have an implementation plan but are waiting for official approval on budget, staffing, and other costs for this ongoing initiative.

Your dedication to weave diversity, equity, and inclusion into our department’s culture is vitally important.
