Yale Internal Medicine HIV Training Track

The mission of the Yale HIV Training Track is to provide necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude to future physicians who have a special interest in HIV medicine and through this enhance the capacity of qualified physician-leaders to meaningfully care for people living or at risk for HIV/AIDS.

The HIV Training Track is a three year track and is available to residents in the Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program.

The Yale HIV Training Track is a three year track and is available to residents in the Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program. In addition to the standard Internal Medicine training, residents will learn to provide state-of-the-art longitudinal primary care to a cohort of patients infected or at risk for HIV infection as part of a multidisciplinary team at the Yale Center for Infectious Diseases. The trainee in the HIV Track will care for persons living with HIV and from the LGBTQ community. The trainee in the HIV Track will work with Faculty preceptors who are experts in both Primary Care and HIV medicine to provide HIV primary care and PrEP for their patient panel.

Residents who successfully complete this three year HIV training track will be qualified to take the HIV Specialty Certification examination from the American Academy of HIV Medicine.

Note that trainees participating in this track will have access to the same wide range of experiences as all Yale Internal Medicine residents including Global Health Elective, Research in Residency, Writer’s workshop, etc. Total inpatient, ICU, and ambulatory time is in keeping with ACGME requirements. The trainee will also rotate on our inpatient unit compromised of a Faculty Attending (an infectious Disease specialist), one (1) resident, one (1) intern, and one (1) or two (2) Yale medical students.

Our program allows for both outpatient and inpatient HIV experiences through the Yale Center for Infectious Diseases and Yale New Haven Hospital. We care for 1,600 people living with HIV/AIDS, with more than 7,000 outpatient medical visits a year. Residents in the HIV Training Track will have the opportunity to rotate with our local partners including APNH, Leeway, and the CHCV to gain experience in caring for marginalized populations.

The Yale HIV training track (HIVTT) is a Track within the Yale Primary Care Program but has a separate NRMP code from the Yale Primary Care (YPC).
