Billy Carson, PhD

Billy Carson, PhD, is a Hilibrand Postdoctoral Fellow in the McPartland Lab at the Yale Child Study Center. Billy earned his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University working with advisor Dr. David Carlson in close collaboration with the Duke Center for Autism and Brain Development. While there, Billy developed novel machine learning methodology to extract interpretable representations from high-dimensional neural time series data, providing information on how neural activity differs in autistic children compared to their typically-developing peers. Currently, Billy continues to leverage computational approaches in his research, combining approaches from multiple fields such as machine learning, digital signal processing, and dynamical systems theory in order to parse time series data collected from the brain. By doing so, his work aims to uncover interpretable representations of neural activity in the hopes of deepening our understand the neural mechanisms underlying autistic behaviors and traits.
