Assistant Professor Adjunct of Ophthalmology & Visual Science and Immunobiology

    Biography

Eric Hoyeon Song is a physician–scientist whose research in immunology and ophthalmology seeks to unravel the principles of immune privilege in the brain and eye. By examining how specialized tissue environments regulate immunity, his work reveals why certain organs resist inflammation and how these protective mechanisms can be harnessed for therapy.

A central theme of his recent research is the contribution of the lymphatic system to immune regulation in the central nervous system and eye. His group has shown that lymphatic function not only influences clearance of proteins and metabolites but also shapes the balance between protection and pathology in diseases such as neurodegeneration, cancer, and ocular inflammation. His recent publications in Nature and other leading journals introduce novel approaches to modulate these pathways for therapeutic benefit.

Eric holds joint faculty appointments in the Departments of Immunobiology and Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at Yale. He has been awarded the Burroughs Wellcome Career Award for Medical Scientists, named Chief Resident of the Yale Ophthalmology residency program, selected as a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellow, and recognized as a STAT Wunderkind for his scientific contributions.

He completed his PhD training with Akiko Iwasaki at Yale, his master’s in biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins, and his undergraduate degree in biochemistry at the University of Southern California.
