Overview
Arya G. Varthi, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon who provides surgical and nonsurgical care for people with general complaints about the bones, muscles and joints, especially those related to spine problems.
For people who need surgery, Dr. Varthi has special expertise in surgeries of the neck (cervical spine), mid-back (thoracic spine) and lower back (lumbar spine). He is skilled in both traditional and minimally invasive approaches, including minimally invasive decompression (laminectomy) and spinal fusions, both of which can help patients find relief from pain caused by spinal compression.
However, Dr. Varthi believes in seeking out nonsurgical solutions for his patients whenever possible, as long as the treatments help the patient get back to enjoying the activities and lifestyle they aspire to. “I am passionate about the process of helping each patient reach his or her individual goals,” says Dr. Varthi.
As a practitioner, he often draws upon the expertise of neurologists, physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, and other specialists, he says.
In addition to providing clinical care, Dr. Varthi is an assistant professor of medicine in the Department of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine.
