Addressing the concerns raised by educators and trainees about call room conditions has been a priority for the Department of Surgery. Recognizing the critical importance of these spaces, leadership took swift and collaborative action to improve cleanliness, safety, and functionality while laying the groundwork for long-term enhancements.
The feedback was elevated to institutional leaders, including President Kate Heilpern and Dr. Steve Huot, leading to a coordinated response. Dean Caruso, Vice President of Support Services & Sustainability, partnered with Environmental Services (EVS) and other key teams to address immediate concerns while developing sustainable solutions.
Immediate Improvements
Several key measures have already been implemented:
- Daily Cleaning Schedule Expansion: Rooms previously excluded from the master cleaning schedule are now serviced daily.
- Communication Enhancements: Cleaning schedules have been reaffirmed with GME programs and communicated to call room users.
- Contact List Update: A streamlined contact list for issue reporting has been provided to the GME office to ensure prompt resolution.
Supporting Privacy and Cleanliness
To respect privacy and avoid disrupting personal belongings, EVS staff have implemented a new card notification system. When personal items prevent cleaning, a card is left in the room to inform users, with a tracking system to identify recurring barriers. This initiative encourages shared accountability for keeping call rooms ready for maintenance.
Looking Ahead
While immediate needs have been addressed, the department is also exploring long-term improvements, such as expanding space and increasing the number of available call rooms. These efforts reflect a sustained commitment to supporting educators and trainees in an environment that meets their needs.
“This comprehensive response demonstrates how collaborative problem-solving can turn challenges into opportunities to enhance shared spaces. These improvements underscore the department’s dedication to creating a functional and respectful environment for all,” said Department of Surgery Chair, Dr. Nita Ahuja.
