Sarah Kirsch, MMSc, PA-C, who graduated from the Yale School of Medicine Physician Assistant Online Program in 2023, was the lead author on an article in the Journal of the American Academy of PAs. The article, Hospital readmissions reduction programpenalizes safety net hospital clinicians, looked at the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP), started under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Based on a literature review, the authors concluded that modifying the HRRP risk-adjustment calculations to include social risk factors has the potential to equalize reimbursement for hospitals that serve the most vulnerable patients and reduce negative unintended consequences of the HRRP.
