Emily Weiss NEA BPD Recording

May 03, 2023
  • 00:00Hi everyone, my name is Emily Weiss and today
  • 00:03I'm presenting a poster on a psychotherapy
  • 00:06group that I Co created and Co facilitated.
  • 00:10This group blends DBT,
  • 00:11mindfulness skills, and Taekwondo.
  • 00:13Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that
  • 00:15emphasizes mind body connections and has
  • 00:18positive effects on psychological well-being.
  • 00:20In part one of this project,
  • 00:23we ran six groups in total on an
  • 00:25adult psychiatric inpatient unit.
  • 00:27Each group consisted of a
  • 00:29different mindfulness, skill,
  • 00:30instruction, dynamic stretching,
  • 00:31and basic Taekwondo,
  • 00:33hand and foot movements.
  • 00:35In a sample of 19 adults,
  • 00:37we looked at the effects of group
  • 00:40participation on patients moods and explored
  • 00:42patients experiences of being in the group.
  • 00:45We found that patients reported
  • 00:47significant decreases in anxiety
  • 00:49after participating in the group.
  • 00:51They also tended to report increases
  • 00:54in relaxation and happiness.
  • 00:55These differences were only
  • 00:57marginally significant.
  • 00:58However,
  • 00:59the effect sizes were medium,
  • 01:01so these differences may have reached
  • 01:04significance with a larger sample.
  • 01:07The qualitative feedback demonstrated that
  • 01:09the group was well received by patients.
  • 01:11All patients identified at least one
  • 01:13part of the group they found helpful.
  • 01:15Many found the entire group helpful,
  • 01:17and many reported that they wouldn't
  • 01:20want to change any part of the group.
  • 01:23Overall,
  • 01:24this preliminary evidence suggests
  • 01:26that Taekwondo is a feasible solution
  • 01:29for increasing physical activity
  • 01:31on psychiatric inpatient units.
  • 01:33The next part of this project
  • 01:35examines a similar Taekwondo and
  • 01:37mindfulness group in a sample of
  • 01:40adult patients enrolled in an 8 week
  • 01:43DBT Intensive Outpatient program.
  • 01:44This group takes place as part
  • 01:46of the DBT IOP curriculum.
  • 01:48The first half is a skill instruction group,
  • 01:51focusing on one or two of the
  • 01:53core DBT mindfulness skills.
  • 01:55In the second-half of the group,
  • 01:57we asked participants to reflect on
  • 01:59how they can apply these skills during
  • 02:01the movement practice and provide
  • 02:03some prompts to help participants
  • 02:06practice using the mindfulness skills.
  • 02:08This is followed by stretching
  • 02:10and the Taekwondo practice.
  • 02:12We are currently collecting quality
  • 02:13assurance data and looking at whether
  • 02:15group participation affects mood,
  • 02:17both in the moment and over time.
  • 02:19We are also collecting qualitative
  • 02:21feedback from patients about
  • 02:22what they like about the group,
  • 02:24what they don't like and how
  • 02:26they would improve it.
  • 02:27And finally,
  • 02:28we are asking patients to
  • 02:29rate the group in terms of
  • 02:31effectiveness and satisfaction.
  • 02:33Thank you for visiting my poster
  • 02:34and I hope you enjoy the conference.
