- 00:09a really wonderful and affirming
- 00:11environment for medical student research.
- 00:13And our philosophy is that we take
- 00:16medical students who are committed,
- 00:18creative, passionate,
- 00:19and we give them the resources and
- 00:23the tools to be able to answer any
- 00:26question that they deem important,
- 00:28the mission of the Office of Student.
- 00:31Research is really to enable
- 00:33students to understand the
- 00:35scientific method from the inside,
- 00:37to be able to communicate their
- 00:40research findings for maximal impact,
- 00:43and to really be able to analyze data
- 00:46critically for the rest of their lives.
- 00:49But it's important
- 00:50that people can develop
- 00:52their own educational path.
- 00:54And for that reason,
- 00:56in addition to the curricular offerings
- 00:58such as statistics, study design,
- 01:01rigor and reproducibility, Dr.
- 01:03Chowdhury and Ioffer weekly office
- 01:05hours in which we meet with students,
- 01:08we meet with mentors,
- 01:09and we ensure that their research
- 01:12is developing along the right path.
- 01:15So it's a wonderful opportunity for
- 01:17the medical students and for the
- 01:20faculty to work together on research.
- 01:22The medical students at Yale often joined
- 01:24a lab during the first summer or even
- 01:27earlier during their medical curriculum.
- 01:29So I have been really blessed to be
- 01:31part of the START program here at Yale.
- 01:33This is a unique program.
- 01:35Start is the summer to
- 01:37advance research training.
- 01:39It's that summer right before students
- 01:41enter Yale Medicine and it gives them an
- 01:44opportunity to partner with a mentor.
- 01:46And gain the tools they need
- 01:48to be successful in research.
- 01:50So within the four year curriculum,
- 01:53students have up to 16 months to
- 01:56conduct full-time research and that
- 01:59time is really a key ingredient.
- 02:02On top of that, students have the
- 02:05availability to do a tuition free 5th year.
- 02:09Potentially if students are interested,
- 02:11they have an entire year dedicated
- 02:12to have a research opportunity
- 02:14that will also be supervised
- 02:15not only by a primary mentor,
- 02:17but kind of a mentorship team
- 02:19as well with some additional.
- 02:21Structure that really has probably
- 02:22once in a lifetime opportunity
- 02:23for students to gain research
- 02:24before moving on to graduate.
- 02:26Medical education
- 02:26research is really a central part of
- 02:29the Yale system of medical education,
- 02:32and it's integrated.
- 02:33Yale is one of the few medical
- 02:35schools in the country that
- 02:37requires a research thesis as one
- 02:40of its graduation requirements,
- 02:42and we've actually done so
- 02:43for over a century. Getting
- 02:45into the lab and and or into the
- 02:48clinic and doing research helps them.
- 02:51Understand things in a whole different way.
- 02:53It's learning by doing.
- 02:55The impact can be seen in the
- 02:57professional development of our students.
- 02:59Many of them choose to
- 03:01do a fifth year research.
- 03:02Many of them are able to compete
- 03:05successfully for funding and for national
- 03:07awards in recognition of their work.
- 03:09The national average for graduating
- 03:12medical students is that about
- 03:14half of them will publish a peer
- 03:17review publication at Yale.
- 03:18We're really proud that
- 03:19that figure is over 90%.
- 03:22I think here at Yale you'll really find
- 03:24an environment that is geared towards
- 03:27you and to making sure that you have the
- 03:30tools you need for your future success.
- 03:32We really are invested in your future.
