On June 1, first-year Yale School of Medicine (YSM) MD students Uma Alappan, Britney Omene, Laura Evans, Alex Pan, and Sasha Stogniy competed against nine teams of medical students from across the globe in the International Sim Challenge competition at the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) national convention. Coached by Samuel Buck, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine and director of medical student simulation, the YSM team competed against teams of more senior medical students to manage acutely ill simulated patients in head-to-head rounds and made it to the semi-finals. The team of five had to manage complex cases such as severe pancreatitis with hyponatremia and shock and a crashing epidural hematoma, before covering the material in their coursework, which is a testament to their hard work in practice. They impressively represented Yale on the international stage!
