Dr. Alex Janke (PGY4) was recently awarded an EMRA/EMF Resident Grant to investigate Trends in Complexity and Resource Utilization of Treat-and-Release ED Visits in the US during a 12-year period (2006—2018).
Investigators include Alex Janke, MD; Michelle Lin, MD, MPH, MS; Steven Bernstein, MD; and Arjun Venkatesh, MD, MBA, MHS. The goal of the proposed research is to describe trends in the intensity of ED billing, clinical case mix, or diagnosis frequency, and visit complexity among treat-and-release ED encounters using the largest national all-payer database. The proposed work targets a particular knowledge gap: are billing trends that have been observed in the narrow Medicare fee-for service population true across all insurance groups and how does this trend relate to changes in clinical case-mix and ED visit complexity?
