Biography

Dr. Zhu is a clinician and healthcare informatics professional with extensive experience in health management, biomedical informatics, and data science, gained from both academia and industry. She brings a multidisciplinary perspective to her current role as the Inaugural Executive Director of the Center for Biomedical Data Science at Yale. Dr. Zhu has led program organization and operations for the NIH Bridge2AI Consortium and directs interdepartmental programs across campus, including the Yale-Boehringer Ingelheim Biomedical Data Science Fellowship Program and the Annual Yale Single Cell Research Symposia. In addition to her medical training and practice in anesthesiology, Dr. Zhu received her M.S. in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and her Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics from Columbia University under the U.S. National Library of Medicine fellowship. Before joining Yale faculty, Dr. Zhu served as an External Advisory Board member for the Center for Advanced Technology at Columbia University, physician scientist lead at the Center for Computational Health at IBM Watson Research Headquarters, Chief Medical Information Officer at Kforce Government Solutions, associate medical director at Pfizer, clinical project manager at Philips, and healthcare subject matter expert at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Philips Star Employee Award, IBM A-Level Scientific Accomplishment Award, IBM Management Choice Award, IBM Invention Achievement Awards, and the AMIA and e-Health Distinguished Paper Awards. She is the author of many scientific publications and 13 granted patents. Her patent was reported by both New Scientist and the Belgian daily, De Morgen. She co-edited the Springer book "Personal Health Informatics" and Elsevier book "Digital Health." Dr. Zhu is the Chair for the International Medical Informatics Association’s Organizational and Social Issues in Healthcare Working Group. She has served as the Co-Chair for the American Medical Informatics Association’s Global Health Informatics Working Group, VP of Membership for the Consumer and Pervasive Health Informatics Working Group, as well as Scientific Program and Women Leadership Committee members. Dr. Zhu was elected to the fellowship of the American Medical Informatics Association, and the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics.
