    Biography

Sun-Joo Jang, MD, PhD is a physician-scientist in cardiovascular medicine whose research focuses on the development and clinical translation of advanced cardiovascular imaging technologies. He joined Yale School of Medicine as a Clinical Fellow in Cardiovascular Medicine with support from a T32 research training grant through Y-TRIC.

Dr. Jang completed his internal medicine residency training at Asan Medical Center in Seoul, Korea, followed by residency training at Yale University/Bridgeport Hospital. He earned his PhD in Medical Science and Engineering from KAIST, with a concentration in Mechanical Engineering (2012–2016). His doctoral research focused on the development of high-speed, multifunctional optical coherence tomography (OCT) technologies for biomedical imaging.

He subsequently pursued postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School and the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (2016–2018), followed by research training in the Department of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (2018–2020).

His research interests span the development of novel technologies for intravascular imaging and coronary physiology, including OCT, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), and fractional flow reserve (FFR), as well as image-guided cardiovascular intervention. He is also interested in emerging applications of immersive technologies—including augmented, virtual, and mixed reality (AR/VR/MR)—and artificial intelligence and machine learning for medical imaging. His long-term goal is to bridge engineering innovation, advanced imaging, and clinical cardiology to develop new tools that improve precision cardiovascular diagnosis and intervention.
