    Biography

    Clinical interests: Prostate cancer: elevated PSA, prostate cancer risk, genetic risk, low-risk prostate cancer, active surveillance, robotic prostatectomy, single port prostatectomy, DaVinci prostatectomy, nerve-sparing, pelvic fascia sparing prostatectomy, high-risk prostate cancer, pelvic lymph node dissection, biochemical recurrence, salvage therapy, risk stratification; molecular imaging; PSMA-PET; Watch a video with Dr. Michael Leapman >>

    Michael Leapman, MD, MHS, was drawn to urology by the opportunity to care for patients with urologic cancers. He aims, above all, to deliver the highest level of care with the utmost consideration and compassion for the impact cancer has on patients, their families, and their communities.

    Dr. Leapman is an Associate Professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Urology at the Yale School of Medicine. He serves as Clinical Program Leader of the Prostate and Urologic Cancers Program at Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital, and as Co-Leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control research program at Yale Cancer Center, where he is also a member of the Cancer Outcomes, Public Policy, and Effectiveness Research (COPPER) Center. He leads an active and highly productive research program examining how new diagnostic technologies are adopted into prostate cancer care, and what they mean for patients' outcomes, costs, and quality of care. His recent work includes national studies of active surveillance for early-stage prostate cancer and work estimating the longer-term outcomes associated with PSMA-PET imaging.

    Dr. Leapman graduated from Cornell University, where he majored in Neurobiology and Behavior, and received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He earned a Master of Health Science degree from Yale University. He completed General Surgery and Urology training at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and a Society of Urologic Oncology fellowship in urologic oncology at the University of California, San Francisco and joined the Yale faculty in 2016.

    Clinical Care

    Overview

    Michael S. Leapman, MD, who specializes in prostate, bladder, testicular and kidney cancers, loves his work as a urologic oncologist.

    “Every day, I have the ability to make a difference in a patient's life,” says Dr. Leapman. “It's a tremendous honor and responsibility, and it's very rewarding.”

    A member of Yale Cancer Center, he sees patients at Smilow Cancer Hospital and the West Haven Veteran’s Administration. An assistant professor of urology at Yale School of Medicine, he studies the best treatments for prostate cancer and how gene expression signatures can predict the aggressiveness of this cancer.

    “Hearing the emotionally wrought words ‘it’s cancer’ is extremely difficult to navigate,” he says. “So that's one of the issues that we are sensitive to, and continue to strive to improve.”

    The patient-physician bond is essential in helping patients with prostate cancer, for example, to choose which kind of treatment is best: surgery, radiation therapy or active surveillance, an ongoing monitoring of what can be a slow-progressing disease.

    “It really is a very special relationship between a urologist and a patient. I have found that the team at Yale is 100 percent invested in the outcomes of our patients, and we stand out by seeking to understand their concerns, goals by being there for them every step of the way.”
