    Biography

    Karen Xiao received her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Connecticut after graduating from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Arts in English. She completed her internal medicine training with a focus in medical education at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and completed her gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at Yale University, where she also served as chief fellow. She specializes in treating a variety of gastrointestinal illnesses and symptoms including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome. She performs colonoscopies and endoscopies for diagnosis and management of these diseases. She believes in partnering with her patients to address their individual gastrointestinal needs and working closely with the rest of their medical team to ensure high-quality care. She is interested in medical education and in improving health care access and outcomes for underserved communities. She serves as the Director of Digestive Diseases for the Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers where she works with fellows to advance equitable care.

    Overview

    Karen Xiao, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist and an assistant professor in the Section of Digestive Diseases at Yale School of Medicine.

    As a general gastroenterologist, she is dedicated to diagnosing and treating a broad range of gastrointestinal conditions and symptoms, including heartburn, acid reflux, dyspepsia, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and irritable bowel syndrome. She performs procedures such as colonoscopies and upper endoscopies to manage these conditions effectively.

    Dr. Xiao is passionate about improving healthcare access and outcomes for underserved communities and serves as the director of the Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers for Digestive Diseases.

    “I feel privileged to hear my patients' stories every day, especially those who have historically faced barriers to specialty care, and to be the one providing that care and helping make it more accessible,” she says. She collaborates closely with other providers, including physicians, nutritionists, mental health care providers, and community organizations, to offer comprehensive and holistic care.

    Dr. Xiao received her medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, followed by internal medicine training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and a gastroenterology fellowship at Yale School of Medicine.
